
Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Kass.
Hi Dave, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Five years ago, after a twenty-plus-year career in Entertainment marketing and research, I was looking for a new professional challenge. I knew I wanted to be in the travel industry but wasn’t sure what aspect. After reading about how travel agents were making a comeback with millennials, I enrolled in a course called Travel Leaders of Tomorrow. At first, it was primarily to give me something to talk about in interviews. After getting “excited” about travel insurance (which is vital on certain trips), I knew I was on to something. Nobody gets jazzed learning about insurance…lol
I had two friends who worked for two top LA agents. They allowed me to come in a few days a week to “intern”. There I learned a little more and became a lot more excited. Finally, one day the program lead asked for my resume and told me she had arranged an interview with the president of a local travel agency that was hiring new agents.
The guy was my age and was intrigued (and honestly amused) by my eagerness and willingness to start at the bottom. I was hired on the spot.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy. But a passion for travel, natural abilities in research and customer service, and a strong desire to succeed have helped smooth things out when the road gets rough. Plus, I had some of the best mentors which always helps.
At first, I struggled to learn the antiquated old-timey travel agent software. There’s a reason why gate agents seem to be banging away at the keyboard just to change your seat…
Learning the various hotel products/destinations and managing the requests of demanding clients is a constant. But it’s all worthwhile when a client posts about their greatest vacation ever. Or, when I’m able to accomplish the impossible – like getting a client’s 14 yo kid home from Europe in less than 24 hours when the borders were closing in 2020.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Every Christmas my family would travel to Florida to visit my grandmother. I was “in charge” of getting all of the information from the airlines to find the best flights, fares, etc. This was pre-internet. So basically, it was a 13 yo kid calling the airlines and gathering info. But we always had the best fares and flights.
