Today we’d like to introduce you to Carl Johnson.
Hi Carl, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I love children and I started working with children over 25 years ago, and I knew immediately that this was my purpose. Working with children who’ve experienced trauma can be a very challenging, yet rewarding experience. I moved here from Chicago in June of 1997 and started working at my dream job in July, at the East Valley-Child Crisis Center.
After spending 20 years there helping children and families, I decided to start my own business where I help parents, teachers, and other caregivers. I teach therapeutic ways to prevent and respond to challenging child behaviors.
Through my business, I help explain “the why” to behaviors and I provide tools to caregivers and help them to look at behaviors through a trauma lens.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road at all. Some of the challenges include connecting to the community, being more viable, and letting them know that I’m out here to help support them and their children.
Being a male in this field can also have its challenges, as sometimes people are unsure if I really know about children.
Once I get the chance to speak, they quickly see that I am very passionate and knowledgeable about children, due to my extensive training and development over the years.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
As a professional behavior coach, I specialize in training, coaching, and helping parents and teachers practice using the tools that they learn during our training and consultations. My other specialty is trauma-informed care. I am a certified trauma support specialist and a certified trauma and recovery practitioner.
Services include training, parenting classes, consultations where parents can ask questions, receive training and information about the importance of self-care, receive in-home support to help address behaviors, support for parents during school meetings such as IEP to help their child to be successful at school, etc.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to grow the business and become more visible in the community in order to support more families. In the near future, I’d love to offer services and training in other states to support children and families all over the United States.
