Today we’d like to introduce you to Carie Perrino
Hi Carie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My first career was as a registered dietitian. I worked in counseling, hospitals, and home-based care, before stepping into private practice where I started to see incredible changes in patients using concepts of functional nutrition – emphasizing a whole-person approach and helping them find the root cause of their illness. I felt called to do more so I pursued a career in naturopathic medicine, which has given me even more tools in my tool belt to help my patients feel healthier and happier. My fiance, Spencer Warren, and I opened Love Your Health Natural Medicine in February 2024, where we are the doctors who listen and validate our patients’ symptoms when they have been told by other healthcare professionals that they are “fine”. We are proud of our patient-centered approach and work with our patients to educate them about their health so that they can be stronger advocates for themselves and others.
In addition to our practice, I teach nutrition, IV therapy logistics, and a course on medical ethics and lab review at the local naturopathic school (Sonoran University of Health Sciences) as well as nutrition at a local nursing school (Jersey College).
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. When I decided to pursue an advanced degree in medicine, I moved to Arizona from Chicago because I was told that I would be a shoe-in for a Physician Assistant program here. After the interview, I was turned down because they “did not believe that nutrition was a vital part of healthcare” and found my philosophy on medicine to be boring. This turned out to be a gift because I learned about naturopathic medicine, which was not a licensed profession in Illinois so I was not familiar with it.
Fast forward to graduating from Naturopathic Medical school and opening our practice. There have been a lot of hurdles to being the business owners and the doctors in the practice that are not covered in school. We have learned a lot along the way and persevered. It has been incredibly rewarding to have built this practice from the ground up and see my career goals come true.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We own a naturopathic medical practice in Tempe, AZ called Love Your Health Natural Medicine. We are the doctors who will help you take control of your health so that you can feel happier and healthier. We specialize in treating the gut, mold illness, and hormone imbalance. We are different from other doctors in our individualized approach. Each of our patients leaves their appointment with a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to your health journey. We combine all of the modalities that are available to us including nutrition, herbal medicine, supplements, acupuncture, and pharmaceuticals to ensure our patient’s safety while also getting to the root cause of their illness.
I’m proud of our transparency with patients as well as our follow thru to ensure that they have the results that they are looking for in order to live their life to the fullest.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see naturopathic medicine continuing to gain traction and becoming more mainstream. We are still working (in many states) to be licensed professionals. We are fortunate in Arizona to have a full scope of practice, however, very few insurance companies accept us which is a barrier for patient care. It can be expensive to pay out of pocket when you are also paying for insurance. We hope to a see a shift that makes our medicine more available to the general public.
