Exploring Life & Business with Brittny Smith of Homesmith Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittny Smith.

Brittny Smith

Hi Brittny, It’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us. To start, could you share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Brittny, and I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I grew up in a cute little 2 story farmhouse with white walls and hardwood floors before Joanna had even met Chip Gaines. I attended the University of Arkansas and met my husband shortly after graduation. We were married 2 years later, in 2008, and moved from Arkansas to Arizona. Over the next 12 years, we bounced around between Michigan, Shanghai, Texas, and Brussels, adding 4 children, many job titles, and lots of collected furniture. In 2018, we decided to move back to Arizona and began designing and remodeling a 1978 ranch-style home in Mesa. After a three-month whirlwind renovation, I knew designing and remodeling homes had to be part of my future. I was hooked and asked a local Broker/Home Flipper/Friend if I could help him flip properties for $20/hour. By the end of 2019, I had helped design and renovate 6 properties and was right in the middle of 2 more giant projects: the Mesa Vic and the Arcadia Modern Ranch. We held the Mesa Vic open house in February 2020, right before COVID lockdowns began, and then held the open house for the Arcadia Modern Ranch in July 2020. By the end of 2020, we had completed 8 more properties and had added several new clients. By January 2021, we hired our first employee and now have a team of 8! In 2024, we are tackling more projects than ever, including another 1970s-era home in Paradise Valley that is getting a multi-million dollar makeover and a 12,000-square-foot new build down in Queen Creek. We have 17 active clients and have completed over 30 renovations since our humble beginnings in 2019.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing worthwhile is easy; I have found that true when starting a new business. I’ve had personal challenges juggling the needs of my 4 kids, who were all very young when I discovered my talent for design and once-in-a-lifetime challenges like COVID-19 that impacted everyone in ways I don’t think we fully comprehend yet. But when you find something you genuinely love to do and are good at, challenges are just something you overcome and learn from, and those help you greet future challenges that are even bigger and harder with more confidence and skill.

As you know, we’re big fans of Homesmith Design. What can you tell our readers, who might need to be more familiar with the brand?
At HSD, we help our clients bring their ideas and dreams to life in a way that balances beauty and function to set the backdrop for beautiful living. Our talented designers guide homeowners through the daunting process of renovating or building a home by helping them navigate the decision-making process to create a home with acute attention to detail from our years of experience. We offer three distinct services to our clients: complete service design, where we partner with our clients at every step, from working with an architect and contractor to installing furnishings and styling. Our other two services break our full-service design into the renovation/building phase and the furnishings/styling phase to give clients more flexibility in their budgets. No project or budget is too small to benefit from the help of a designer, and everyone should be able to access great design if they want or need it. I offer free discovery calls to anyone who submits an intake form on our website to tell us a little about their project. Then, I provide each client with a custom design proposal for our design services. I’m proud of the culture we’ve created at our studio and the reputation we’ve cultivated amongst builders and contractors for being capable and knowledgeable.

Before we let you go, we have to ask if you have any advice for those just starting out.
Learn how to partner with others. This is so simple and yet so important. Everyone wants to succeed with the things in which they invest time and energy. By pooling time, skills, resources, and ideas, you can accomplish more than you could ever do alone.
