Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan Mccarthy
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey to founding Protea Medical Center began in Honolulu, where I attended Tai Hsuan College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. After earning my master’s degree, I relocated from Honolulu to Arizona in 2002, where I enrolled in naturopathic medical school and began to practice acupuncture part time.
During my second year of medical school, life took a challenging turn when my son was born with a life-threatening kidney disorder. For weeks, no one could identify what was wrong. My wife and I saw countless specialists, but none could offer an effective solution. Doctors provided prescriptions based on their specialties, but nothing worked, and my son’s condition worsened.
Finally, we met Dr. Mark Joseph, a nephrologist at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, who admitted he didn’t know what was happening. “I have no idea what is going on with this kid,” he said. “Let me draw a big circle around the problem and run some tests. We’ll keep looking until we’ve figured this out.” His systematic approach and willingness to keep searching ultimately led to the discovery that my son had a rare genetic kidney disorder, saving his life.
This experience profoundly impacted me. I realized that I wanted to be the kind of doctor who listens deeply to patients and thoroughly investigates their issues, drawing a big circle around the problem until I find the answer.
My chance to apply this philosophy came a couple of years later when I met Jenna Caruso. By then, I had graduated from medical school and was working at a clinic focused on environmental toxicology. Jenna was a patient who lived a healthy lifestyle but felt terrible, particularly around her menstrual cycle. The doctor I worked under focused on treating her mercury poisoning, which can cause emotional instability. However, as Jenna’s toxicology reports improved, her emotional symptoms remained unchanged.
Given the freedom to explore other possibilities, I dug deeper. I noticed that Jenna’s symptoms were cyclical, tied to her period, which didn’t align with the constant symptoms of mercury poisoning. I decided to investigate hormonal imbalances and ran a comprehensive battery of tests. The results showed that Jenna’s progesterone levels were low. I prescribed a safe, natural progesterone supplement, and Jenna’s health improved rapidly.
Watching Jenna reclaim her life was a pivotal moment for me. “Wow,” I thought. “This is powerful stuff.” Driven by this success, I dedicated myself to learning more about hormones and helping women achieve balance and well-being. Over time, this passion evolved into a calling to specialize in women’s endocrinology.
My practice grew primarily through word of mouth, driven by my commitment to delivering high-quality care at reasonable prices. The early years were tough—my car didn’t have air conditioning until 2009, which was a significant challenge in the Arizona heat. Yet, those difficult times helped me build a solid foundation based on accessibility and affordability. Unlike boutique clinics that cater only to high-paying clients, Protea Medical Center has always aimed to serve a broad spectrum of patients, ensuring that everyone feels better and receives the care they need.
As the clinic grew, I was finally able to give back to the family that supported me through the hardest times. My wife, Celeste, who lost her job when our son was born, became an integral part of our growing business. She took on the role of office manager, helping to build the foundation of the clinic from the ground up. Her passion for health and wellness led her to become a certified nutritionist, where she continues to guide our patients toward healthier lives. On top of that, she now runs the Protea Movement Studio, fostering a community focused on strength, balance, and well-being.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. In the U.S., healthcare is largely run through insurance, which creates unique challenges when offering a cash-pay model. Even patients paying out of pocket are navigating a system built around insurance. Most people aren’t accustomed to paying directly for care, so we had to build an entirely new business model that made cash-pay services both accessible and sustainable.
One of the biggest challenges has been structuring our pricing to make treatments affordable while also supporting the business in a healthy way. In traditional models, the focus is often on maximizing profit, but for us, it’s about making smart, intentional decisions that benefit both the business and the patient experience. For example, a school teacher is already paying for health insurance through their job, so when they come to us, they’re paying out of their discretionary income. It’s critical that we make our services valuable and worth that extra expense.
On a personal level, one of my biggest learning curves has been transitioning from doctor to business owner. I didn’t go to medical school to run a business, yet here I am managing operations, growth, and financial strategy. At one point, I had to hire consultants to help me build systems and processes that would allow the business to grow in a sustainable way.
Another challenge has been managing my own mental health. Running a business, especially in healthcare, can be incredibly stressful. I’ve had to learn how to recognize when I’m operating from a place of anxiety or burnout and make adjustments to stay grounded.
Despite the challenges, we’ve never had a down year. Growth is exciting, but it’s also stressful. Staying ahead of that growth and ensuring the business remains stable is an ongoing challenge — but one we’re proud to navigate.
That said, the reward is huge. Seeing patients experience life-changing improvements in their health makes all the effort worthwhile. Watching someone regain mobility, reduce chronic pain, or return to activities they thought were out of reach is deeply fulfilling. It reminds us why we do what we do.
We’re not just building a business; we’re building a community of patients who trust us to help them live healthier, more active lives. There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing you’ve made a real difference in someone’s quality of life.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

“I truly cannot say enough great things about Dr. Warren! She is always on time and takes her time explaining everything in detail so I better understand the disaster that is my body. So far, I feel the best I’ve felt in years but I still have a ways to go. Knowing I have her to guide me through is everything I needed and more!”
“My friend suggested Protea and my husband went in first. I finally went to my appointment yesterday. I ended up seeing Dr. McCarthy. I was nervous and he was very compassionate and thoughtful. He saw through my tears and was able to give me information that I understood. The office staff was exceptional and they exemplified what good customer service should be like.”

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success operates on a tiered system, with three primary pillars:
Innovative Care That Delivers Real Results
The first and most important measure of success is that we’re providing care that works — treatments that are innovative, effective, and worth the investment our patients are making. Many people spend their discretionary income on fad therapies that promise results but don’t deliver. We wanted to break that cycle by offering proven treatments that patients can trust. Success means patients experience real, lasting improvements in their health and know that the care they’ve received is worth every dollar.
A Thriving, Supported Team
The second pillar of success is ensuring that the people I work with — my team — are thriving. It’s important to me that our work environment is top-notch, with a supportive culture and meaningful benefits. I want my team to feel valued and inspired, and I measure success by how well I can deliver on that promise. If the people around me feel supported and fulfilled in their work, that’s a big win.
Personal and Professional Growth
Lastly, success means that I’m continuing to grow, both personally and professionally, while pushing the business forward. For example, launching our new orthobiologics department is a huge milestone. Success isn’t just about maintaining what we’ve built — it’s about continuing to innovate and evolve within the industry. I want to keep pushing boundaries, exploring new treatments, and finding ways to offer even better care to our patients.
But beyond these pillars, success is also deeply personal. At the end of the day, I ask myself two key questions: Am I a good father? Am I a good husband? Because if I’m not taking care of my family, then what’s the point of any of this?
It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of professional success, but I’ve learned that it should never come at the expense of the people who matter most. I don’t want to take time away from being a father. We need to connect outside, spend time together, and be present for each other. That’s what grounds me and reminds me why I do what I do.
I also believe that success is never a finish line. The nature of service is that there’s always more we can do. There’s no ceiling to our skillset or our learning, especially when it comes to helping others. We’ll never truly be “finished” in our mission to serve.
That said, balance is essential. We can only see so many patients to ensure we’re providing each person with the care they truly need. It’s about finding that balance — doing the most we can for as many people as possible, while also making sure that our care remains personal, intentional, and effective.
