Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Haymond.
Hi Andrea, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As an immigrant, I quickly learned that America is the land of opportunities. As a young girl, I had a thing for clothes. In high school, as everyone explored what they wanted to do in the future, I wanted to know if I wanted to pursue fashion. But my mom encouraged me to pursue a safe, high-paying career path. Sitting in my college freshman biology class, I knew that pre-med was not the move for me. I switched my major to business not knowing what I wanted to do in the future but thinking it would be a safe career. I figured Business would provide good life skills. Sitting in my business classes, I felt like I was in the right place. Halfway through my junior year, I felt like something was missing. I looked through the course catalog and stumbled upon Fashion classes. One fashion class would have been fun, but not enough. I landed on a fashion minor. Again, sitting in all of my fashion classes I felt like I was in the right place.
I also listened to a lot of business podcasts on my way to classes and knew one day I needed to start something of my own. After I graduated, I had the opportunity to work for amazing small business owners and mentors. I was encouraged to pick a niche and start something of my own. I had my own fear holding me back for a while until I decided to just pull the trigger because there would never be the right moment.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Having a full-time job and trying to balance this business has been my biggest struggle. After a long day of work, all I want to do is to come home and rest. I would love to dedicate more time to my business!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I strongly believe that self-confidence can be achieved through wearing the right clothes. Dre’s Closet shows that no matter what stage of life you are in, you can find, wear, and style cute clothes to reach your divine potential. Each and every woman is unique and we want to make sure that everyone is included!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
My favorite childhood memory is the first time my family went on vacation after moving to the United States. I was about 9 or 10 years old. My sister and I went to summer school while my mom went to work. One day we came home from summer school and our bags were packed.
We were so confused because my mom was home early and our bags were packed. We asked where we were going but my mom trying to not give it away just ignored us. We jumped in her friend’s car who dropped us off at a nice resort. We were in heaven! We stayed there for a couple of days. We swam until our hearts were content and shopped at the closest mall until we dropped. It felt like such a big deal to us!
