Exploring Life & Business with Shelina Miranda of Grind That Coffee LLC dba Grinders Coffee Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelina Miranda.

Hi Shelina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Grinders Coffee Co has been a local legend for 19 years, established July 2nd, 2001 by Dennis Miller. I myself started working for him my sophomore year at Sunnyslope High School in 2008. I worked for Dennis for roughly eight years, growing from that silly little high school girl to a full-time manager. I had left due to differences, but we had reconnected at a friend’s memorial service to which I learned he wanted to sell the shop. After talking with my partner we decided to take on the crazy adventure of running a coffee shop AND have our son; we were six months pregnant when we took over! From there things have been fruitful but not easy. My partner wound up staying at home with our son while I ran shop, which at times can be taxing in so many ways. We were then faced with the corporate monster moving into a drive thru in our same plaza. At first, we were giving them a run for their money, until tragedy struck; on the eve of our 18th anniversary our espresso machine caught on fire in the middle of the night and caused severe smoke damage to our shop. We wound up being closed for four months. After reopening late October of 2019 We went to go regain our following. As things started to look better for us number wise and growth wise covid-19 then hit in mid-March. As 2020 has been a trail for most; this year has been very stressful in its own. I’ve been running the shop solo six days a week with some guest stars here and there.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a local coffee roaster. We have several signature houses blends and scones to die for. I think what’s sets us apart is our family type vibe. I have so many people who I just know, we don’t have to order, so we can carry on life conversations. I genuinely care for all of my people, whether I know their name or not. I have lost some people through the years, sometimes it hurts because I do remember them but it’s one of those things where you have to remember that life is late people aren’t going to stay in the same situations forever.

What were you like growing up?
I was very introspective as a young child, as I got older, I started becoming more exuberant and outgoing. I enjoyed participating in choir in middle school and high school. Before graduating high school and becoming a real adult I greatly enjoyed reading non-fiction novels as time has progressed though I find it harder to find time for those fantasies. I also really enjoying the fine arts although I am not gifted in creating anything, I can truly appreciate it!
