Meet Jarrod Coronado of Queen Creek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarrod Coronado.

Hi Jarrod, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
All my life my dad was in the coffee business. He sold coffee and coffee equipment for many years and in multiple states and I had many opportunities to work with him, so I was raised with an appreciation for coffee. About 12 or 13 years ago he started to roast his own coffee, which my family and I consumed regularly, but it wasn’t until about 3 years ago that we decided to partner with my dad, starting a company to distribute the coffee he roasted.

Sadly, shortly after we began a partnership his roasting facility was completely destroyed in a fire. It was sad and devastating for him. Due to his age, he decided he would retire and no longer roast coffee.

It wasn’t too long after that tragedy that I began roasting coffee for my family and I. I didn’t like drinking coffee that wasn’t specialty coffee, so I started to roast my own. It quickly became a favorite hobby and I roasted so much that we had to give most of it away. As we gave out coffee to our friends and family, they routinely asked us if they could buy it, but we never let them. As those inquiries persisted, we determined about 18 months ago that we would re-launch our coffee business, but this time selling our own roasted coffee. My family and I all run the business, with each person having unique responsibilities. It is challenging, but also very fun, and we are blessed to be able to do this.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, especially losing my dad’s coffee and having to start roasting on our own. However, that has been one of the most fun and exciting parts, and so we see how the Lord worked this out for us to move in this direction. We also regularly face the challenges of keeping coffees in stock, which has become harder recently.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
There is an artistry to roasting specialty coffee. Each of the coffees are unique and we work hard to draw out the uniqueness of each origin. That provides an amazing cup of coffee and yet variety between the coffees that is not common in the industry. Most often people comment to us that they had no idea that coffee could be naturally sweet or have distinct notes. We work hard to ensure that each coffee provides a special experience.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
We have had many people encourage us, support us, and help direct us. First our family and friends have been a huge help and encouragement. We have also had a lot of help from Jacob Henderson and Edwin Martinez, both of whom are importers that work very closely with us to help determine what coffees for our portfolio well. Finally, we rely on a lot of prayer, we trust the Lord for His direction and have a great support in our church family to lean on.
