Daily Inspiration: Meet Zach Wetzel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Wetzel.

Zach Wetzel

Hi Zach, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Zach Wetzel. I have lived in Tucson since 2017. I am married and have two amazing kids! In 2014, I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in vocal performance and was named Male Singer of the Year. After this, I obtained my Juris Doctorate in Entertainment Law. For my career, I teach music and theater to elementary students at BASIS Charter Schools. After school, I am the Executive Director of Stage Foundation Community Theater, a new semi-professional theater company based in Tucson. We recently performed Man of La Mancha and were featured on ABC KGUN9. The accomplishment I am most proud of is when I directed a choir of 140 of the best singers in the state for a production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame in Phoenix. I enjoy networking with professionals across the state and helping empower youth to find their voice through the Arts.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It could have been smoother! But it’s been worth it! During La Mancha, we faced many obstacles. We had to find a new Music Director towards the end of the process. I had to lead some music rehearsals myself in the interim! The AC unit in the theater stopped working, so we had to change venues completely! The community stepped forward to help, providing us with lighting and sound systems in the new venue, and it was one of the best displays of true community theater I have ever seen! Opening night, we were hit with a huge storm that took out the lights. Our loyal audience sat through the show, which we did, running on emergency backup power without any lighting or sound! We received a standing ovation.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
More than anything, I am a teacher first. I have had kids go on to be in professional theater and television. Earlier this year, I was in a production of Ragtime, and one of my students played my son. They are now in a production at Arizona Theatre Company. I am proud. Outside of BASIS, I have music-directed children at Arts Express Theatre, Live Theatre Workshop, and Saguaro City Music Theatre. It is my absolute favorite thing to do.

Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I find people who have more experience than me and who I trust. Unfortunately, in the performing business, you cannot trust everyone. But if I’ve worked with someone and they have treated me respectfully, I ask them for advice. It has worked wonders for me. I have been blessed with many mentors.
