Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Gomez.
Hi Wendy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Wendy, and I just recently became a certified personal trainer. It all started in Cuba, my hometown, around 11 years ago when I decided that I wanted to do something for my body, basically, I just wanted to lose some weight. I was actually doing my degree in Chemistry by that time. I started doing kickboxing as a form of cardio pretty much every day, and it started to become a habit even with the few resources and the very limited information we had in my country, now I also wanted to start building healthy eating habits, it really became a lifestyle for me.
Fast forward, at 21 years old my husband and I decided to move to the US, having access to more information and resources here, little by little I started to get more involved in the fitness world, and what started as a “I just want to lose some weight” became a very intense passion. during this time I discovered weightlifting, and I got fascinated by everything about it, I always say that weightlifting changed my life in so many ways, it was a gift from God to me. I even built my own garage gym, I still want to add a couple more machines to it, but it is my favorite room in our house, and I am very grateful for that.
About 2 years ago, I remember I was talking to my husband in a restaurant, we saw this girl next to us with her family and she was blogging everything they were doing, and it was the moment that I tell my husband, you know that I really want to start sharing my lifestyle with all the people I possibly can, I really want to share with everyone else what I have learned and show them that it possible to not only look better but also feel better, no matter your conditions or limitations, and he told me, why don’t you start? Do it!
You have absolutely everything you need to do it, and if not I will help you, we will figure it out together. His words were very encouraging to me, and a few months later, I decided to start sharing my workout routines, my meals, full recipes, giving tips about training and nutrition, everything I possibly can on Instagram to help the friends and family that followed me back then with their lifestyle.
I have met hundreds of amazing people through the platform, and it makes me extremely happy when I see that part of my family is now living a more healthy lifestyle, and also followers that send me DMs thanking me for sharing this content that motivates them every day, and even though it has been hard sometimes I still share high-quality content pretty much every day, because I really love what I do.
it was in December of 2020 when I decided to quit my job in a laboratory, I worked there for 5 years, and took the decision to make a career out of my passion for fitness, and a year later got my certification as a personal trainer by the National Strength and Conditioning Academy.
I truly believe that moving our bodies and building healthy eating habits should be part of everybody’s lifestyle, it should be made simple and accessible for everyone. I am very grateful I get to do this every day and sharing it with other people, and being able to help them makes it very meaningful to me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I can’t say it has been a smooth road, but absolutely it has been an amazing ride.
I will say starting from scratch in a foreign country was definitely hard, it takes so much from you emotionally, also I did not speak any English when I moved here, making the time and effort of instead of watching a movie you like or just take some rest after work, go to school to learn the language, I remember perfectly, and I still do it, on my way to work, or back home I would listen to online English classes instead of listening to music, it was all so worthy!
Something else that was definitely challenging for me was quitting my job in the lab, a job that I had for 5 years, it was a hard decision, in my head I was leaving something pretty secure for just a dream of mine, becoming a certified personal trainer. I have to thank so much my husband who extremely support me during this last year, not only financially, but emotionally when I needed it the most.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Since I just recently got my certification as a personal trainer, I am working hard and in the middle of the process of building my own business as a fitness coach as we speak, my goal is to provide personalized training and nutrition plans for everyone. I will be launching my programs and services very soon, will be announcing it all on my Instagram page.
My main propose is to build a family with my clients, making them feel comfortable and confident by making them discover their potential, and transforming their bodies to the best of their capabilities.
Provide people a more simple and accessible active lifestyle than what social media has made them believe, and that will be possible by giving them workout programs that suit their real lifestyle, their schedule, what they enjoy, and also teaching them the right way of having a healthy relationship with food, and last but not least providing them with the specific tools they need to overcome any obstacles in their fitness journey.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Effort and consistency.
