Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Meikle.
Hi Troy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the 90’s during the era of disposable cameras and never went anywhere without one. I would save all the money I earned from chores I did for our neighbors to buy more disposable cameras and have my film developed at our local camera shop. I still have a huge box filled with all the prints from those days.
I didn’t know that I would eventually make a career from this hobby of mine until I had already begun my freshman year of college as a music major. My friends had all asked me to take their senior photos before our high school graduation, so I went out and purchased my first camera to take their photos so I had begun to take my hobby a little more seriously. After my freshman year, I decided to make the switch to a film photography major. Best decision I could have made. Shortly after that, some friends have asked me to photograph their wedding. I had almost no idea what I was doing, but the day went off without a hitch and I still look back on those first wedding photos with pride. I didn’t know at the time that weddings would be the most rewarding part of my career and that I would eventually make a living capturing love stories. The requests for wedding photography just kept coming in and I couldn’t be happier about the path it set me on.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I did struggle in the beginning of my career. Because photography is a creative medium, you feel like a little piece of your soul goes into every shoot, every wedding. So when you happen to have unhappy clients, it can be devastating, I learned a lot of hard lessons but I think sometimes those lessons create much better outcomes in the future.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in fine art film wedding photography. This means I photograph weddings on film (and a little digital) to achieve a timeless and unique aesthetic. There is an indescribable element that film photography gives us and renders photographs that are more like works of art than snapshots. I am known for dreamy portraits and beautiful details in my work.
Can you talk about how you think about risk?
I am usually very shy about taking risks. I have a type-A personality so if the benefits cannot absolutely outweigh the cost, I probably wont make the gamble. However, I have found that as an entrepreneur, risk-taking is essential. I put a lot of time and money back into my business to push myself to be better every day and learn as much as I can always. I don’t think I would be successful without taking risks and I don’t think you will find many entrepreneurs who found success without taking risks as well.
