Daily Inspiration: Meet Suzanne Rugg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Rugg.

Suzanne, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been drawn to the way creativity can shape how people feel, whether through art or the spaces they live in. After earning my degree in Visual Arts and Design from San Diego State University, I worked in several creative roles, including graphic design, corporate interiors, custom closet design, advertising, and even children’s fashion. Each experience gave me a different perspective on design and helped me develop both the creative and practical skills I use today.

I founded Suzanne Rugg Interior Design in 2005. During the housing downturn, I had the opportunity to design and stage hundreds of homes for real estate investors and homeowners preparing their properties for sale. It was an incredibly valuable education. I learned how to see the potential in a home, solve design challenges quickly, manage budgets, and make thoughtful decisions that added both beauty and value.

Over time, my business naturally evolved into the full-service residential design and renovation studio it is today. We now guide our clients through the entire process, from the initial concept and space planning to materials, furnishings, artwork, procurement, and installation. I especially love working on homes that need to feel more personal, comfortable, and reflective of the people who live there.

My design style has also become more defined over the years. I’m drawn to casual elegance, natural materials, collected pieces, and spaces that feel elevated without being overly formal. I’m incredibly proud of the company I’ve built, grateful for my team, and continually inspired by the clients who trust us with their homes.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. I started my business in 2005, not long before the housing market changed dramatically. During the downturn, I had to be resourceful and willing to adapt. Designing and staging homes for real estate investors became an important part of my business, and while that period was challenging, it taught me how to make thoughtful decisions, work within real-world budgets, and recognize the potential in almost any property.

Like many creative business owners, I also had to learn that being a talented designer is only one part of running a successful firm. I’ve had to become knowledgeable about contracts, construction, procurement, logistics, accounting, marketing, and client communication. There have been difficult vendor situations, unexpected construction issues, damaged or delayed products, and moments when circumstances were completely outside of my control. Learning how to communicate clearly, protect my clients, and remain solution-oriented has been an ongoing part of my growth.

One of the biggest lessons has been learning to trust my instincts and establish strong processes and boundaries. Earlier in my career, I sometimes tried to accommodate every request or take on projects that weren’t the right fit. Over time, I’ve become much more intentional about the clients and projects we accept and about creating a process that allows us to do our best work.

Every challenge has helped shape the business I have today. The road hasn’t always been easy, but it has made me more resilient, resourceful, and confident as both a designer and a business owner.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m the founder and principal designer of Suzanne Rugg Interior Design, a Scottsdale-based, full-service residential interior design and renovation firm. We guide our clients through the entire process from the initial concept, space planning, and construction selections to furnishings, artwork, procurement, and final installation.

We specialize in creating comfortable, elevated homes that feel personal rather than overly designed. I’m known for a style I describe as casual elegance or laid-back luxury: warm, inviting interiors with clean lines, natural materials, layered textures, unique artwork, and pieces that feel collected over time. Many of our projects have a warm modern, desert modern, or modern Mediterranean influence, but I never want every home to look the same. The goal is always to create a home that reflects the clients’ lifestyle, experiences, and personality.

My background sets me apart in many ways. I began in visual arts and graphic design and later worked in several design-related roles before moving into residential interiors. I also spent years designing and staging homes for real estate investors, which taught me how to recognize a property’s potential, solve practical problems, and understand how design decisions affect both the experience and value of a home. That combination allows me to approach each project from a creative, functional, and highly practical perspective.

We also place a great deal of importance on managing the details. Full-service design involves much more than selecting beautiful materials and furnishings. It requires careful planning, communication, budgeting, coordination with builders and trades, procurement, receiving, problem-solving, and installation. Our clients are often busy professionals or homeowners managing a second residence, so they rely on us to oversee the process and advocate for them from beginning to end.

I’m most proud of the trust our clients place in us. A home is deeply personal, and being invited into someone’s life to help shape the place where they live, gather, and create memories is something I never take lightly. I’m also incredibly proud of the business and team I’ve built, the long-term relationships we’ve developed, and the recognition some of our projects have received. Ultimately, though, the greatest accomplishment is creating a home that feels completely right for the people who live there.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Most people are surprised to learn that before focusing exclusively on interior design, I worked in several different creative fields, including graphic design, advertising, corporate interiors, custom closet design, and even designing a children’s fashion line. My career path wasn’t perfectly linear, but every experience taught me something I now bring to my work.

Graphic design shaped the way I think about proportion, color, composition, and visual storytelling, while my other roles taught me how to listen carefully, solve problems, and turn an idea into something tangible. Looking back, all of those seemingly unrelated experiences were quietly preparing me to become the designer and business owner I am today.
