Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Vandevier.
Hi Spencer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in music as a kid. I sang along with the radio and was put into the church, school, and community choirs. I tried piano a few times throughout my life but the saxophone and the bass guitar were the first instruments to stick. I studied music and earned my degree in music performance with a focus on electric and upright bass from Santa Fe University of Art and Design in Santa Fe NM.
I started having an interest in songwriting in high school and only dabbled in it until college when I started to take a more serious interest in it. Now I continue to play bass and work with different acts but most of my time and work is spent on my solo singer-songwriter act, which I take all over the state.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Making a living in the arts is always a struggle. One of the biggest hurdles that I have had and continue to struggle with to this day is booking shows and making connections. Finding new places and getting a foot through the door is a challenge. It can be a bit disheartening and a daily trial but it is always exciting to get an email for a booking from a new venue.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a musician and singer-songwriter. I play bass in a couple of bands but I work mostly as a solo acoustic act playing original songs and covers. I generally write and play story songs in the genres of folk and country. I am known for my singing voice and my songs I think. I have a high clear tenor voice that mixes well with the songs I write as well as the covers I have chosen to mix into performances.
My songs tend more to the folk genre but have a few touches of country in them. Some friends have described some of my songs as having medieval qualities. I think being a bass player turned guitarist sets me apart in performance and technique. Fingerpicking is my favorite way to play guitar and my technique is directly caused by bass. I am incredibly proud of all of the strides I have made as a performer and continue to grow my business.
What do you think about luck?
Luck has played only a small role in my career. There have been a lot of hours put into being a musician and when opportunities have come up I was able to rise the to occasion it. I think my friends and family have been more of a force in my career and business than luck has.
