Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia St James
Hi Sophia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began producing shows in 2004, the same year my son was born. From the very start, I found myself captivated by both performing and producing—my first time on stage was also my first time organizing an event. That debut show was a success, drawing an enthusiastic audience, and from that moment on, I was hooked. My passion for live entertainment, coupled with a steady stream of creative ideas, fueled a series of highly successful productions across Oregon, Washington, and Arizona.
As Arizona embraced legal recreational cannabis, I saw an opportunity to merge my love for event production with the evolving cannabis industry. My background in healthcare—particularly working with individuals living with and dying from HIV/AIDS—gave me firsthand insight into the medicinal benefits of cannabis. Many of the patients I worked with had medical marijuana cards, and I witnessed how cannabis provided them relief and improved their quality of life. I have always believed in its potential as a tool for wellness.
In 2019, I hosted my first cannabis-infused event, an Ostara Gathering. It was a resounding success, bringing together a vibrant community to celebrate, connect, and enjoy cannabis in an inclusive and intentional space. Encouraged by that experience, I continued to curate events—until the pandemic forced a temporary pause. During that time, I returned to school to pursue nursing, ultimately earning my degree. However, my passion for production never waned. I knew that when I returned to event planning, it would be with a fresh perspective—one that fully integrated cannabis culture.
In 2018, I conceptualized a groundbreaking idea: a cannabis burlesque show. I held onto the vision until the timing was right, and with Arizona’s legalization of recreational cannabis, I knew the moment had arrived. That was the birth of *Blunts and Burlesque*—a one-of-a-kind production that merges the sensual artistry of burlesque with the liberating, communal experience of cannabis. As the creator and co-producer of this innovative show, I continue to push boundaries, create unforgettable experiences, and build spaces where cannabis, performance, and community thrive together.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, the journey has been relatively smooth, though not without its challenges. Every obstacle has ultimately led to growth, and I’ve learned that perseverance always brings new opportunities.
One of the recurring challenges in event production is securing timely responses from venue bookers and event coordinators. The waiting game can be frustrating, but persistence pays off—I follow up relentlessly until I get the answers I need. Another challenge comes in the form of backstage emergencies, whether it’s a last-minute costume malfunction, a technical issue with music, or other unforeseen hiccups. These moments require quick thinking and adaptability, skills I’ve honed over years of experience.
Despite these occasional hurdles, running a local production company has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing an idea come to life, watching an audience engage with a performance, and creating spaces where people can connect and celebrate make every challenge worthwhile. The journey has only strengthened my passion for what I do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I produce unique, cannabis-centered events that blend entertainment, education, and community. Through *420 Femme Productions*, I curate experiences that appeal to all cannabis enthusiasts, offering everything from cannabis burlesque and live art drawing to craft nights and educational brunches. My goal is to create spaces where people can connect, celebrate, and explore cannabis culture in an engaging and inclusive way.
One of my proudest accomplishments is having two of my productions featured in *Phoenix New Times*, a testament to the impact and creativity behind my events. What truly sets me apart is my commitment to diversity—not just in audience engagement but in the talent I showcase. I am intentional about ensuring my stages represent a wide range of acts, skin tones, styles, and aesthetics. Authentic representation matters, and I work diligently to create spaces where performers and attendees alike feel seen, valued, and celebrated.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have been independent from the start, but I’ve built a strong network of fellow performers and producers who are always willing to share insights and advice. Having a supportive community has been invaluable, even without a formal mentor.
For those looking to connect and grow in their industry, my best advice is to be present. Attend the shows you want to be a part of, engage with the producers and performers, and introduce yourself in person. While digital networking has its place, nothing beats face-to-face interaction—it creates a lasting impression and helps establish genuine relationships. Building connections through direct engagement has been one of the most effective ways to open doors and grow within the industry.
