Daily Inspiration: Meet Shae Coon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shae Coon.

Shae Coon

Hi Shae, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – To start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I write dark romance that tantalizes while leaving you guessing what comes next. My inspiration came from author Penelope Sky after reading her Buttons and Lace series and falling in love with the angsty alpha males and twisted plot lines. I have been writing since I was twelve, but I decided to publish in 2020. I have ten published titles, including the Marron House Romance Series and the Dark Roma Mafia Romance Series. Before I started writing romance, I received my veterinary assistant certification. I worked in a low-cost vet clinic before switching gears to become the top-performing project coordinator for a local construction company and ultimately leaving to pursue my dream of becoming a full-time writer. When I’m not writing, you will find me volunteering with an anti-human trafficking organization or relaxing with my husband and two children.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No. We became a one-income family overnight, and I had no idea how readers would react to my writing style and the triggers that litter my books. Then came weeks of writer’s block. It’s one of the reasons I started doing pro-bono work designing book covers for other authors. I needed an outlet for my creativity when I got a bad case of writer’s block.

Thanks – What else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My writing work is dark, twisted, and angsty romance. Many of my readers say I have a unique way of writing, and I don’t bother filling pages with unnecessary writing, yet I can create an intense scene that makes you tingle. I own and operate Book Designs by Shae and decided a few months back that I would no longer charge for my services when I saw so many authors being gauged on cover design. I was in that position once, and I want to help authors get the cover they always dreamed of and not have to settle. I am the designer, formatter, and typesetter for every role required.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
You have to take risks. If you enjoy someone’s writing and feel you would benefit from their expertise then ask. The worst they can say is no. A little over a year ago, I took a chance and slipped a “Hi, how are you? I love your work” to both Andrew Biernat (actor and model) and Wander Aguiar (photographer and model) and was shocked and thrilled that they both answered. The next thing I knew, I was interviewing them, and we became friends. The same happened with my favorite authors, Zoe Blake and Penelope Sky. Now Blake has a copy of my book, and Sky has been a huge cheerleader for me.
