Daily Inspiration: Meet Robert Murtaugh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Murtaugh.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up I was the kid who was always bringing home some animal I found, we always had our own dog at our house and at both sets of grandparents. As a young adult, I got into animal rescue and volunteered for a Wolf hybrid group, then became involved with some other dog rescues and horses. about 9 years ago I decided to start my own rescue for all breeds of dogs after spending ten years working with one of the bigger breed-specific dogs rescues here in Phoenix.

To help supplement the costs of running a dog rescue I decided to become a certified dog trainer, which also would help me better understand the dog. I opened Condition K9 after working for one of the bigger dog training places here in Phoenix. I have worked some of our rescue dogs up to Canine’s good citizen standards to make them more adaptable. I am a member of PAC 911 and a new hope partner with Maricopa County, we save at-risk dogs with some of the toughest medical and behavioral of the County’s euthanasia list.

The training facility is state of the art with a CrossFit section that focuses on the dogs getting in better shape. I provide superior food including a raw diet, bottled water, and intermitted fasting along with treadmill training, weight pull, and agility. I teach academy classes to people aspiring to be dog trainers. Also, work with a few of the local Drug and alcohol facilities and do outings with dog demonstrations

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been quite a challenge building out the facility and staffing, which is still challenging. There is a lot that I still would like to do so I could bring more rescue dogs here right now I have plans to put in an outside fenced area.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I think one of the lessons I have learned that is very important to me is asking myself daily where I can be of service.
