Today we’d like to introduce you to Rita Sterling.
Hi Rita, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always taken photos for the entirety of my life. It started on disposable cameras, then on cell phones. I love capturing images of others. Images mean a lot to me for many reasons.
Being able to go through old photos of my family, my grandparents, my parents, and our pets that have passed- there is just something about seeing an image of when people were at their happiest, it brings me so much joy. I wanted to be able to help people capture memories, the happiest time of their lives – that one day their children and their children’s children can look back on.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been easy, but it has been rewarding. With social media, there is a large number of people taking photos so there are always other creatives that can be chosen over you.
At first, I was constantly comparing myself, and seeing what I could do differently. I’ve learned to just focus on my craft while doing the best I can. The rest will fall into place. I now have such wonderful clients that I wouldn’t trade for the world!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in portrait photography. Sessions of families, seniors, couples, and pets. I’m most proud of the relationships I build with my clients. I have families and couples that have been coming to me for 4 years when they could go elsewhere, and it really is the best feeling!
My work is not typical of standard photos. I add moody filters and capture images that are candid instead of basic poses. Finding the in-between moments is my favorite!
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
I started my business with not the best camera, no marketing with the exception of Instagram, and really little to no training.
I loved photography so much that I wanted to build it into a business and with hard work and focus I was able to do that. Starting a business in any capacity or field is always a risk but it is absolutely worth it.
