Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Nelson.
Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had a passion for home decor, design, and crafting. After the birth of my 2nd daughter, I found myself up during the night and on the couch a lot for nursing sessions. I decided to spend that time building my Instagram page and sharing vignettes of decor around my home and documenting DIYs I worked on.
Along the way I’ve been able to learn so much more through Interior Design classes at a local college, inspiration from other social media DIY’ers, and most importantly trial and error of working on home remodeling projects myself! The old saying “love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life” is so true!!
Over the past few years, I’ve been able to help clients with design ideas in their own homes and reach hundreds of thousands of viewers on TikTok and social media and bring to life the hobby of crafting and decor.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being widowed at the age of 27, I learned that things could change in an instant. Fast forward to 2021 when CoVid hit and I was once again reminded that nothing in this life is guaranteed. We can’t control everything, but we can take the risks and live a life with purpose and experience.
As a family, we decided to sell our home in 2021 and pack up and travel full-time with our young daughters. I felt a calling to grow our bond as a family and plant roots down in a new area. While on the road, living in 400 sqm while trying to create, film, and work with zero privacy (or quiet!) was definitely not easy!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As with many other creative-brained people, my mind goes a million miles per minute and my “work” takes on a few facets. Primarily, I am a content creator which has led to the opportunity to work with numerous amazing corporations such as MiracleGro, Michaels, Mattress Firm, DAP, and so many others. I’ve also been able to work with many mom-and-pop start-ups and help with the marketing of their new products and ideas which is so rewarding!
On a creative level, I’ve been able to personally help clients with home decor and interior design aspects both in-person and virtually. I also have a small but growing Etsy shop that carries handmade items for tiered trays, bookshelves, or other small spaces that need a little extra something.
What are your plans for the future?
I am so beyond excited for the future and what the unknown holds! Now that we have settled down back into “sticks n bricks” we have a new home that is a blank canvas for home renovations and projects that I’m able to document on social media. Of course, crafting is a huge part of my day-to-day and I’m constantly creating and brainstorming new ideas.
I’m super excited about my recent Etsy shop expansion to include graphic design merchandise–and I am adding new designs almost daily! In the long term future, my dream goal is to open a little home decor boutique shop. I would love to offer quality, trending home items at affordable prices and even host crafting classes in a back room!
