Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Etzin.
Hi Pamela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was brought up in a family where our presence was very important. We were never allowed to look messy, too casual, or not put together no matter where we went. My father felt that our clothing communicated much about who we were and how he wanted us to be perceived.
Hence, my first job in high school was selling women’s clothes and I decided then I wanted to work in fashion 4 years later I moved to NYC from Buffalo.
My career began in the wholesale trade on Seventh Avenue as a showroom sales assistant and for 12 years I worked in sales & management in the fashion industry with dress manufacturers to top Seventh Avenue designers. it was fabulous & exciting but it was time for a career swerve and that was back into retail with some of the best women’s stores in management & sales. What I picked up and learned all along the way was that it mattered what women wore and no matter my position, I was always passionate about empowering women to feel good about themselves through their wardrobe.
After many years of following the corporate brand, I decided that I had to “do it ” my way… There is a way to show women how to dress for their lifestyle, body type & personal style by showing them through my keen eye and intuition what works best for them. It’s really about collaboration & listening.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the past 12 years business has been up & down. I had to zero in on who was my best client and learn exactly who they are and learn how to market to them. I also had to get help with copy editing and virtual assistants but finding help has always been an issue because so few truly get my voice. I have worked with over 2 dozen people through the years and I have had to redo my website to make it more current finding that perfect person who came to me through a referral on Linkedin.
As women are going back into the office, I am finding that they appreciate the help and focus of what to buy, how to spend their budget and create an easy stress free wardrobe by creating an everyday capsule wardrobe. As a Personal Stylist, I go into homes and stores so for 2 years I did not have a business and I didn’t know if it would ever come back.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the owner of a Personal Styling Business for women and I specialize in women over 40. After working so many years in the women’s wholesale trade, women’s retail, and now my business, I get women. I walk their walk & talk their talk. I understand their fear, and sometimes shame and I am great at collaborating with and empowering them. I have a very strong gut instinct and a great eye for style.
I am most proud of the results that women feel from working with me. They develop easy dressing skills and learn how to shop smart and efficiently. It’s not just shopping, it’s the teaching component that I share as well as the personal shopping piece and editing and re-shopping in a closet.
What sets me apart is that I am not a follower of fashion, even though I am a stylist. I care more about women’s style and comfort level while showing them how to elevate their looks in a comfortable and doable way. But it is my gut instinct and eye for style that sets me apart.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I follow instagram for fashion, I read fashion magazines in print, I get style news from Europe and I study what people wear in the streets.
