Daily Inspiration: Meet Mike Tizzano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Tizzano. 

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2013 I was working at a big bank in the mortgage operations department when my 8-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia. She fought for 7 months before passing away. After a lot of reflection on the fact that I missed a lot of time with her and she missed out on a lot of things, simply because we couldn’t afford it, I decided that I wanted more for my other daughter. I took a leap into mortgage loan origination, which was risky at 100% commission but I didn’t want to put limits on my time and financial freedom. The first three years were a struggle, but some consistency, persistence and truly caring about the people we serve led us to grow to where we are today. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not, I jumped in not really knowing much about building a business. I’m not a good salesperson, so the buying leads and cold calling thing wasn’t going to work. In 2017 I almost quit the business entirely but decided to give it one last go. Up until 2019, I was working a second job 

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a mortgage loan originator with Fairway Independent Mortgage. I now have a small, 4-person team. We set ourselves apart by truly understanding that we are a part of the biggest financial decision most of our clients will ever make. We take the time to make sure they understand the process and are comfortable with what they are doing. I’m most proud of the fact that our business is 100% referral-based. I’ve never closed any loans that were internet lead purchased or through advertising. 

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Probably just playing sports outside pretty much every day. Wiffle ball, pickup basketball games, football in the park. Seems like today everything has to be planned. Back then we just went outside and decided what to play.
