Daily Inspiration: Meet Michael Haslim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Haslim.

Michael Haslim

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had an interest in photography and a fascination with how a single photo can bring back a flood of memories. After college, I hit the road with some close friends who were already established photographers. They taught me the ropes, and before long I was booking my own gigs—one of which even took me to Mexico for a wedding, which was both surreal and incredibly rewarding.

But about seven years ago, I decided to step back and climb the corporate ladder at Yelp, hoping to sharpen my business skills and explore new opportunities. While I learned a lot and grew professionally, I always felt like a piece of me was missing. This year, in between jobs, a former colleague asked if I’d shoot their event. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel jumping back into it after all those years, but the second I started snapping photos and capturing all those genuine, joyful moments, I knew I’d found my spark again.

In 2024, I’ve returned to photography with a renewed sense of purpose. Now, every time I look through the viewfinder, it feels just as exciting as it did when I first started—and I know I’m finally back where I belong.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting out, I struggled to balance the creative side of photography with the business end—finding clients, building a brand, and making enough to pay the bills. Traveling for shoots was exciting but came with logistical headaches and a lot of personal sacrifice. Later, stepping away from photography to focus on a corporate career meant losing momentum and having to rebuild my confidence when I returned. It took patience, grit, and a willingness to learn from my setbacks, but each challenge ultimately helped me grow into a stronger, more well-rounded photographer.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Honestly, for me, photography isn’t just about taking a good picture. It’s about telling a story—capturing those real, honest moments that clients can revisit and feel all over again. Whether I’m working with a couple on their wedding day or helping a small business define their look and voice, I’m all about getting to know who they are and what they want to share with the world. I tap into my marketing background to make sure every image not only looks great but also truly represents them and sets them apart.

What I’m most proud of is the genuine connection I build with the people I work with. That’s what sets my work apart—my ability to understand their unique vibe and turn it into something tangible and timeless. It’s not just about pretty photos; it’s about creating something that resonates, leaves an impact, and makes them feel seen and understood.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Honestly, my favorite childhood memory has to be those Christmas trips we’d take to California to celebrate with our extended family. I still remember the excitement as we’d pile into the car, knowing that in just a few hours, we’d be surrounded by all the people we loved but didn’t get to see often. Once we arrived, the house would be filled with laughter, familiar faces, and amazing home-cooked meals. That tradition was more than just a vacation—it was what made the holidays feel truly special to me.
