Today we’d like to introduce you to Meagan Griego.
Hi Meagan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My hair journey started in 2005 when I graduated from Cosmetology Careers Unlimited, which is a competency-based school in Oregon. I have worked in a variety of affordable salons in Oregon before moving to Arizona in 2020 just before the pandemic. Once the world opened back up again, I worked for a variety of Supercuts. I enjoy the laid back environment of the chain, but wanted more freedom in terms of what i could charge, my hours, and wanting to run things my way. I opened my doors in July of 2025, and am building a clientele from scratch. I am an alternative stylist and I do men’s and women’s hair. I have 20 years of experience and leave every client happy. There’s something to be said for having OCD tendencies… I want all my clients to love their hair.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have worked at many salons that paid less than minimum wage (plus tips), and so I have suffered my share of economic hardship, which is why I offer 2 free cuts per week to those who legitimately can’t afford a haircut. In 2008 I had a baby who was diagnosed with autism, and I was raising her alone with no financial or physical help from her dad. In my 20’s I spent a fair amount of time and money in a bottle, but thankfully, I have been sober since 2019. This new lease on life is what convinced me to open my own salon, as well as a full-time student at Mesa Community College for my bachelor’s in applied science.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am what is considered an “Elder Emo” which means all the styles that are popular now, I was doing personally on myself. I specialize in color, particularly vivids, highlights, grey coverage, block colors, etc. I also have a lot of experience with creating layers without sacrificing length, butterfly and wolf cuts are my favorite. I love creating texture in the hair. I also excel at aline bobs and men’s fades. I pay attention to detail and basically any haircut you show me I can re create.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In my industry, I see a revival of the punk or emo styles for the alternative girls and boys. I also love the more creative textured cuts for women and the continuation of gentleman cuts, tapers and bald fades. Styles repeat themselves so we shall see what is in media which will influence what people are wanting for themselves.
