Daily Inspiration: Meet Marissa Hamera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Hamera.

Hi Marissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m a movement specialist who believes fitness is about more than looks. I use science and biomechanics to help my clients perform, function, and reach their goals while preserving longevity. I didn’t always start with this thought to help others in this capacity. My goals and aspirations revolved around being a professional dancer who would travel internationally to perform on stages. Still, after years of dancing, my body took a beating, and I needed to find help for myself.

In finding help to learn, strengthen, and rehab my injuries, I not only met my husband, who helped me transform my body, but I became so interested in learning and teaching others what I didn’t once know. Together, we studied at the Gray Institute, taught at multiple fitness companies and large gyms, and networked like crazy! Through networking and making great connections with the right idea, we got to train trainers, physical therapists, chiropractors, and anyone who dealt with the body all over the world!

Today, I work virtually with my private clientele from ages 22-70, using movement/fitness to help them understand their bodies and make better choices for longevity’s sake. I’m so lucky to do what I love, give back to others, and make a difference in someone else’s life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If the road had been smooth, I might not be where I am today. First, coming out of my injuries and letting go of childhood dreams wasn’t the easiest step, but it was the first step in achieving something greater than I believe I would have achieved performing. Today, I am much more fulfilled than I ever was on the stage, which I initially couldn’t have imagined. Secondly, leaving a gym that hand delivered me clients vs. having to find them on my own was the biggest struggle, and I’d say it is still a minor one I face today as I don’t like to seem like a salesperson or like I’m just in this for the money.

Initially, I had a tough time articulating what I actually do and what my knowledge of human biomechanics could translate into for someone. I was also under the mentality that I could help everyone! That is not the case. Today, I’m much clearer in what I do and who I want to help and know when to put my ego aside and refer out.

Now, my business has come in pretty much strictly referral based from clients or other coaches/practitioners. I’ve become less afraid of asking my current clients or network to refer me, which seems to be a win-win for us all! Do I think I could reach more people if I tried to use social media more? Yes, but one step at a time here 🙂

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a movement specialist, I’m proud of my ability to listen and connect with my clients. When they come to me, most of them have worked with others before, but it sounds like they were never heard. Most of the time, it sounds like most of the people they have worked with in the past liked to impose rather than expose what’s truly going on in their bodies. I believe that when someone comes to you in pain and with goals to get better, it’s a process of working together and letting the client make some self-discovery. They are the ones in their body, not me, so it’s all about me guiding them and asking the right questions so that I can hear them before we jump into the course of action.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My biggest cheerleader is my husband, Jason Hamera, who is also in the business. He’s also been my biggest inspiration as I started as his client and had been so heavily influenced by him to give others the gift of a pain-free body. The rock of knowledge that I stand and lean on is the Gray Institute out of Adrian, Michigan. From the faculty and my peers, this community has given me all that I have known and helped me become better at understanding and working with peoples’ bodies and their minds and spirits. Sometimes, someone comes in, and the transformation is more about the mind and spirit than someone’s body, but the Gray Institute community helped me see that.
