Daily Inspiration: Meet MacKenzie Pudenz

Today we’d like to introduce you to MacKenzie Pudenz.

MacKenzie Pudenz

Hi MacKenzie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello! I’m MacKenzie, a farm-grown, earth mama raising seven wild beauties with my husband in the Arizona desert. My days are filled with chasing kids and soaking up sunshine year-round. Deep down, I’ve always feared forgetting a moment or a memory, which has fueled my passion for capturing all the magical moments in life—whether big or small.

Becoming a mother has heightened this fear and sparked an urgency in me to document every perfect and imperfect moment, every detail, every joy. I’m driven to capture the connections we feel but don’t always see, preserving life in all its rich, exponential beauty. I’m always searching for light, movement, connection, and love. Babies don’t stay babies, kids grow, and time doesn’t keep—so I focus on capturing images that do, giving you beautiful, tangible memories to hold onto forever.

When I photograph families, it’s completely organic—emotion is my guide. We all feel those moments: the peace that wraps around you when you breathe in the scent of your newborn, the way your toddler’s embrace feels like they’ll never let go, or the glance from your teenager that gives you goosebumps because they’re growing into more than you ever imagined. Those emotions are undeniable. We all parent differently, but we all feel love—and love is a gift we all share.

My goal is to preserve those emotions through images, so you can hold onto these moments long after they’ve passed.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel that art is often shaped by its obstacles and challenges—that’s what makes it so precious. We pour our hearts, souls, and every ounce of ourselves into it, giving it our blood, sweat, and tears. The journey of creating art is not always easy, but it’s in these struggles that the true depth of our work is born.

As artists, we face numerous challenges. We navigate the weight of our own timelines and pressures, while also contending with external forces—trends, imposter syndrome, and the expectations of the world around us. The artist’s mind is constantly evolving, always craving new elements and fresh forms of expression. This ever-shifting landscape of creativity brings both inspiration and uncertainty, making the process of creating even more complex.

For those of us who rely on our art to provide for our families, the balance can be difficult. It’s challenging to separate the necessity of creating from the beauty of the process. Yet, it’s this tension between passion and practicality that adds layers of meaning to what we create. Our art becomes not only an expression of who we are but also a testament to the resilience it takes to turn that passion into something that sustains us.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a family photographer specializing in lifestyle imagery. My passion lies in capturing the heart and soul of each family—the authentic moments that reflect their unique connection, love, and story. My approach is all about movement, emotion, and expression. I aim to create images that give a glimpse into those fleeting moments of intimacy and joy, moments that may go unnoticed but hold so much meaning.

What sets me apart is my ability to reveal the raw beauty of family dynamics. I strive to capture the in-between moments—the laughter, the quiet glances, the small gestures—that truly reflect the essence of each family. These aren’t just posed pictures; they are visual stories that showcase the love that binds them together.

I’m most proud of the way my work resonates with families, giving them not just photographs, but memories they can hold onto forever. Every session I shoot is an opportunity to create something lasting and meaningful, something that preserves both the seen and unseen connections within a family.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that may surprise people who know my work is that I grew up in a very small town on a farm, surrounded by my family—my parents, brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins—and, of course, all the animals. That close-knit, rural upbringing deeply influenced my love for capturing connection and life’s simple, beautiful moments.

Another surprising fact is that I have a degree in Nursing and was an ICU nurse before I transitioned to full-time photography in January 2019. Nursing taught me how to be present, to see the details others might miss, and to handle the most intense, emotional moments—skills that I’ve carried with me into my photography. Both careers have given me a profound appreciation for the fragility and beauty of life, and that’s something I try to capture in every image I create.

I was also always the friend with the disposable or old film camera, and sometimes I’d even lug around a giant VHS camcorder! Before I fully committed to photography, I took a class on videography and almost went that route instead. While photography became my calling, I still have a passion for videography and hope to explore it more in the future.
