Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Frisius.
Hi Liz, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Thank you for the interview. I’m a Veteran who became a stand-up comic. For nearly half a century, I lived a military life–Navy brat, Air Force officer, but my time in service was ending. The military sends service members to class in preparation for civilian life. Everyone’s asked, “What will you be when you get out?” Most plan on a similar career field. My response, “a stand-up comic,” generated an explosion of laughter. Laughter springs from surprise, which might explain why the biggest laugh I ever got was in the Pentagon.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s cliché that if the military wanted you to have a sense of humor, they would have issued you one. Mine went missing amid eight deployments, three command tours, and three tours in the Pentagon. Who in their right mind becomes a stand-up comic without a sense of humor? Added to that was facing the expectations of family, friends, and associates regarding what constituted an “appropriate” second career–stand-up comedy, wasn’t it!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Being a stand-up comic requires continually gaining insight into people, looking at things with fresh eyes, and learning new ways to convey meaning. I do that while traveling, tending the Phoenix’s Heritage Square rose gardens, and working as the founder and voice actor for True Grit Tones, LLC. I also produce shows for comedyschools.com
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting?
Be willing to challenge your beliefs, including what you believe about yourself. Most of us grow up with some label: the smart one, the dumb kid, the artistic one, the klutz, the athlete, etc., but we never challenge it. Give yourself permission to try something new and enjoy exploring the unknown.
