Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Kirby.
Hi Lee, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began Dj’ing parties and creating flyers in the late ’80s. After college, I pursued Dj culture and promoted live events in my hometown, Richmond VA. In the late 90’s the culture shifted and I began promoting Hip Hop showcases. This led to working with some of the 90’s biggest Hip Hop artists from Wu-Tang Clan, DMX, Camp Lo, and many others.
In 2017 I had my first child, got married, and moved to Phoenix AZ. Once here I began Dj’ing and promoting parties here as well. Here it was a whole new world of artists, both indy and major. I have been fortunate to work with The Dogg Pound, Dj Quik, and many more. I am thankful to my AZ community for allowing my contributions. Currently, I work with the best platform in the city AZMT. We focus on promoting community-friendly Hip Hop events and artists.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With Hip Hop having grown up as I was growing there have definitely been challenges. For starters, some of my family and friends did not understand my obsession with Black culture being from the suburbs in the south.
Secondly, society at large took some time to catch on so dealing with the city and venues has been troubling at times.
Lastly, the intense nature of the music combined with the passion to be heard has caused Hip Hop to sponsor some of its own issues with violence around shows.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Disc Jockey- music controller for live events, radio Emcee – Host, the ringleader of the circus. Graphic Design – Flyer, video creation.
I am most proud of the thousands of artists I have worked with over the years. Music is a huge release and a great way for the youth to find themselves
I am different. Almost everyone would agree on that. For a while that difference was frustrating, but after a while, I figured out it is a superpower.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Robots everywhere???? My industry has been aided greatly by tech. At least for the foreseeable future, interesting personalities will still have a place to shine.
