Daily Inspiration: Meet Lauren Wong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Wong.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m originally from the Chicagoland area and my desire to travel has brought me to where I am today.

I graduated from the University of Tampa in December 2020 with a bachelor’s in Journalism and a minor in Photography, with the goal to become a traveling photojournalist. I moved to Arizona without knowing anyone to pursue that dream. Fose + McKay has given me this amazing opportunity to start my very own Travel Blog, Escape With Vagary.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Moving somewhere completely new across the country from all my friends and family has been difficult. I love being around people, so working remotely while adjusting to life after college has been a challenge.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I started and write everything for Escape With Vagary. It’s a travel blog that focuses on the Southwest. I take all the photos and videography for our socials and have gotten to take some amazing trips along the way. There are so many talented photographers and writers out there, but what I’d say that sets me apart is that I’m constantly looking for those hidden gems.

I don’t want to just cover those main touristy spots you hear of, so I’ve gotten to see so many unique places and share that with my followers. My top three favorite itinerary trips I’ve done are How to Visit Area 51, Unconventional Las Vegas/Skip the Strip, and a story about the once luxury, now abandoned Salton Sea. While on that trip I got to see Bombay Beach, and East Jesus in Slab City, known as the “last lawless land in America.”

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I’d say to just continue to follow your passion, don’t let anything drag you down. As I said, there are so many talented people out there, but you’re special in your own way, so own that.
