Daily Inspiration: Meet Larry Hart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Hart.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been creating art in one form or another. When I was young there were no computers. So, at a young age I was drawing and sketching anywhere, and on anything. Sketch pads, napkins, school papers. At home, at school, in the car. As I grew older I dabbled in painting, clay, sand blasting, just testing new mediums to see what fit. In my Junior and Senior year of high school I made the decision that graphic design would be my career. Computers were becoming mainstream and I saw a future there. After high school I went to college, obtaining a certificate in Graphic Design and pursued jobs in the sign industry. I always envisioned being a freelance designer, and in 2014 I took the leap, going out on my own, founding Hart Design Firm to provide a productive outlet for my graphic design and fine art skills. Over ten years of producing art for my clients has been a blessing and I look forward to creating everyday.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to becoming a freelance graphic designer has had some rough patches but there are many more good days then bad. The biggest struggles were (are) marketing myself and business, and running all the behind the scene aspects that come with have ones own business. It’s not all glamour and fun designing all day. Finding and obtaining clients, invoicing, emailing, etc are things I did not think about when first venturing out on my own. There is a learning curve to running your own business thing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My main field is graphic design, specializing in Logo Designs, Vehicle Wrap Designs, Apparel Designs, Package Designs, Print Designs and Signage Designs. I have extensive knowledge in creating physical pieces, such as boxes, t-shirts, wall and car wraps. Things that can be seen from multiple angles have there own set of problems.
I help small to mid-size businesses stand out with visuals that actually work. And branding that is cohesive throughout their company. I am most proud to work with Baer Brakes, a Phoenix based brake company, that I helped rebrand and update all portions of their business, creating a unique and look that stands out.

I also have a side hustle, LYM Clothing, where I create automotive designs on apparel and merchandise. It’s a passion project, as I am also a automotive fan.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I don’t see myself as a risk taker, but when the timing was right, the stars aligned, and the reward out weighed the risk, I left my job working someone else and started my business. Took the leap into a full time freelance artist before I knew 100% what I doing. I try to weigh the positives and negatives before taking risks. The bigger the risk, the more time is taken on the possible outcomes. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
