Daily Inspiration: Meet Kim Green

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kim Green.

Kim Green

Hi Kim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career started in the music industry. My first (dream) job was working at Tower Records. Years later, I was hired to write copy for the urban artists at Sony Music. It was when Sony  had just acquired the legendary Def Jam Records. I was at the core of the Creative for acts such as Public Enemy, EPMD, Kriss Kross, and Da Brat, as well as urban artists on Columbia Records and Epic Records such as Maxwell, Babyface, Regina Belle, The Fugees, Sade, Jamiroquai, and many others.

I left there after five glorious years to work at Polygram Records as a Marketing Executive. It was a job I enjoyed, but I knew it wasn’t where I was meant to be. It seemed creative, but it was just budgets, schedules, and being a taskmaster. I left there to work for myself as a freelance journalist and copywriter. I wrote for Essence and several other national and international magazines. My first business name was “Words by Kim.” My clients were  most of the major labels that hired me to write press releases and bios. Eventually, I started to acquire non-entertainment clients, and my entrepreneurial spirit soared!

The one common theme of my work is that I am passionate about words!  I then moved to Arizona, where my business, Veritas Communications, was named one of the fastest-growing businesses in Tucson in the 90’s. Our clients included the Pima Small Business Association and The Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. The pressure was immense and unsurprisingly I was diagnosed with a chronic illness that changed my life. So, I decided that I should return to my one and only love, which is writing. My business name changed to “Words, LLC,” and it was a perfect fit for me. I was also lucky enough to ghostwrite Fantasia Barrino’s, Life is Not A Fairytale  and Ja Rule’s book, Unruly.

As I started writing and working with authors on their books, I decided to become a credentialed Life Coach, which led to my specializing in coaching writers! Which I believe is my true calling. As a writer, I have the gift of discernment and asking the most powerful questions, which I think my clients appreciate the most, as well as my no-nonsense approach and compassionate rigor. I have written three books of my own and two celebrity bios, and now I am happily working with multiple authors to make their author dreams come true.

The work that I am doing with authors is powerful. Writing absolutely heals and I see it everyday.  This is why I have started to include Write-to-Heal individual Coaching sessions and have curated the You Have the Write to Heal women’s retreat that will be held October 17-21 in Tucson. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a smooth road in terms of knowing what I was good at and pursuing it. The obstacles were personal: divorce, raising a child on my own, and being diagnosed with a chronic illness, which is where all of my struggles came in.

But thanks to writing, I was able to honestly ponder what happened to me and what part of it was I responsible for. I don’t want to say it was “easy,” but what made it seamless was that my heart knew and always knew that my gift was words, and that is the road that I have always taken.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a writing coach. I work with authors of all levels to accompany them on their journey of writing and completing a book. Writers come to me at every step of their process. Some come with just an idea, others come with a fully written book that they just want to improve. Then there are those who come with half a book, and we finish it. I specialize in digging deep into what people say that they want to write and determine what they need to write for their healing. As a coach, I pride myself on being a boutique firm. I  want working with me to be a transformative experience for every client where they feel safe,  nurtured, handheld, and seen. For example, I never send my clients to watch a pre-recorded video to understand a concept. I teach it to each client in the way that works best for them and their book.

Each client, each book, and each outcome is different, so my flexibility is what differentiates me and creates a safe space for authors who are often facing the scariest thing they will ever do.

I am most proud of the transformation I see my clients experience when they are writing material that changes them. I am also proud of the two books that I have been involved with, which are New York Times Best Sellers, and the others that have won awards, nominations, or have been acknowledged in some way. I am proud because I have made my clients feel worthy.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
