Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall E. Matthews.
Kendall, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
How I started and… He was my ”Tony Stark,” Iron Man Marvel role model. When I was a kid in St. Louis there was no Best Buy – there was Uncle Arthur J. Reynolds.
He built my first computer and told me about technology. He always was sharply dressed and had the biggest house I had ever seen. So big there was an entire floor I was too scared to go to.
Because of his early influence on my life, when I went to Purdue University, a student counselor asked me, ”What do you plan on studying?”
I said, “Computer technology.”
And that choice has been good to me ever since.
My Uncle passed away, but his legacy still lives on. He was an early pioneer of technology and a leader in the community. I try to model my life after his example – using technology to enrich people’s lives, but also including good old-fashioned values like hard work, dedication, and always being true to yourself.
This has driven me to become a successful entrepreneur as well as contribute meaningfully to my local Purdue Phoenix alumni community. I now leverage technology to help empower business owners in their own lives and give back by creating videos on business tools that actually work.
How I got to where you are today.
My career is in software and artificial intelligence, and one of my roles is head of product marketing for a global business automation company.
I got to where I am because I embraced technology early on. I was an early adopter of computer programs and systems, and I kept up with the latest trends in AI and machine learning.
What I’ve discovered after working in multiple industries across marketing is that while technical skills are important, it’s the ability to communicate with people that really sets you apart.
Setting my sights high, I wanted to be the best communicator in Phoenix.
With a membership of Toastmasters International and following through on it all with hard-earned success at winning a Phoenix regional competition, plus three awards from the American Marketing Association – Phoenix Spectrum Awards for completing top-notch marketing campaigns at a software company, and being voted as the Top 50 Intelligent Automation Influencers of 2023 by Engatica; this boy got his St. Louis swagger back!
Along with my Uncle Arthur’s encouragement, what has helped me grow to where I am was three books:
How to Find Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie.
Show Your Work by Austin Kleon.
You Don’t Need a Title to Be a Leader by Mark Sanborn.
What I’ve learned from living in Phoenix is that there is a unique opportunity to use technology to build relationships, empower people and make a difference.
It is my mission to continue to leverage technology along with the softer skills I have cultivated to help others find success in their own lives.
I’m Kendall Matthews and this is my story. Thank you for joining me on this voyage in Phoenix.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
After graduating with dreams of becoming a marketing mogul, I was soon met in Phoenix by nothing but insurmountable odds with finding a job at a marketing firm.
What did Fate have in store for me? Farmers Insurance – corporate headquarters as a division marketing specialist!
Who would’ve thought?!
But hey – sometimes you find the most unexpected opportunities when you least expect them.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work in business software & Intelligent Automation. I specialize in business-to-business marketing.
On my LinkedIn profile https://www.linkedin.com/in/kendallmatthews/. I have over 45 professional recommendations since I’m known for being a leader that can grow teams and leads with specific examples.
I am most proud of working with founders and business owners showing them that automation can be simple and straightforward. But you can never take people out of the process.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to combine technical skills with people-oriented skills like communication, problem-solving, empathy, leadership, and strategy.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
Having a life worth living. Contrary to popular belief, life is not a marathon — it’s a sprint. It’s not about how fast you can achieve something, but what you do with the time and resources that you have.
That’s why I strive to make every day count by helping others reach their goals and creating a positive impact on those people I’m connected with.
