Daily Inspiration: Meet Jesyka Hope

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesyka Hope.

Hi Jesyka, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona where I still live. I grew up drawing and making collages and making weird outfits. When I was little I would draw outfits from Grease and The Nanny and the Spice Girls. I went to Mesa Community College for fashion and I got an associate of applied science in fashion design and merchandising and a certificate in costume design in 2013.

I started my website in 2015 for clothing, jewelry, and accessories, then I started branching out to other forms of art in 2017. I get my other inspiration from punk rock, drag queens, Lady Gaga, hippies, Betsey Johnson, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, the 80s, the 90s, and anything absurd.

My dream is to someday own my own store here in Arizona called Haus of Hope full of artwork, clothing, jewelry, and other creations I’ve made. I want to do art for the rest of my life. Art excites me and liberates me. It makes me feel fearless. Art is forever!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In 2021 my mom and I lost our apartment due to rising rent prices and not having a new place to go, so we were homeless for about 6 months. We stayed in hotels and a shelter trying to pick up the pieces that whole time.

I obviously had some pretty big fish to fry so I had to close my website during that time and I was barely able to do any art. I could do my art journaling here and there but that’s it. I felt so empty and sad not being able to do much of anything creative. When we finally got a new place in February 2022 I immediately started making art again and I was overjoyed!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love making weird art that no one has ever seen before!

I especially love making mixed media pieces using all kinds of materials like painting, drawing, embroidery, fabric, and paper. I also love recycling and upcycling items in my art to give them a new life. No need to buy new things when there are options all around me! Everything has the potential to be art: waste not, want not!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
It’s okay to ask for help! It can be scary and no one likes being told no, but you need to put away your pride and put trust in those around you who can help you, especially your friends and family, and loved ones.

I have no idea where I’d be today without my family and friends!
