Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hart
Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up singing and always had big dreams of becoming a country singer — I never grew out of those dreams! I moved to Nashville from Gilbert, AZ in 2016 and quickly immersed myself in the songwriting scene. I had no idea what I was doing, but I just figured it out. I went to as many songwriter rounds, events, and coffee meetings as I could and introduced myself to anyone and everyone, hoping someone would take a chance on me. Luckily, some did, and I began co-writing with those writers that were kind enough to say yes. I fell in love with the art of co-writing and have been doing it ever since. Now, I co-write on a weekly basis, play shows both in and out of town whenever I can, and am constantly in the studio recording new songs to release.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Super smooth. No roadblocks or anything! JUST KIDDING! It has been a journey, to say the least, and it still is. I don’t think there’s ever an “end” or “final destination” in this business. There are always more songs to create, more goals to achieve, etc., so finding sanity, peace, and joy in the journey is a daily battle for me. To name a few specific challenges, I was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, OCD, and social anxiety when I was 10 years old. I have had to overcome a lot just to feel brave enough to pursue my dreams. I still deal with mostly general anxiety, social anxiety, and OCD, so playing all the shows, co-writing, networking, talking to fans, etc. isn’t always a cake walk for me. But I love it more than I’m afraid of it, so I keep pushing on. I signed a record deal in 2020 and there were a lot of challenges with the music business in general during the pandemic (similarly to most industries.) I transitioned back into independent artistry in 2023, which was and is an adjustment, but also so rewarding. I am constantly trying to adjust to the ever changing music industry, trends, and social media algorithms, all while doing my best to stay true to myself and evolve at the same time. I wish there was a blueprint for it all!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a country artist and songwriter, mostly known for my father-daughter song, “Half the Man.” This is the song I am most proud of for many reasons.
1) It’s one of the first few songs I wrote where I was actually vulnerable enough to write about my real life. I used to be so afraid to write and share my real emotions, so I would make up stories or write about things that happened to me years ago. In this write I got to express my love and gratitude for my dad and my desire to have a future husband that resembles him.
2) I am so close to my family, and I love that a song I wrote about my dad and family has resonated with millions of people worldwide. My dad is the reason this song exists, and it’s so cool to see so many other fathers and daughters bonding because of it.
3) Before I signed the record deal, I released this song independently and got this song out to the world all on my own. The growth was completely organic, and there’s no other explanation than God, hard work, and maybe a little bit of luck. “Half the Man” was added to over 550k personal playlists on Spotify alone, but not a single Spotify Editorial playlist. I had no help from a label, manager, PR company, radio, or anything. It was all God and the fans.
I have many other songs out that I am also proud of — my debut EP, “1992,” my wedding song, “Loveless,” “Good God,” which is basically the sequel to “Half the Man,” my fun summer song, “5×7,” and many many more coming this year, so stay tuned!!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I can be really shy. I am outgoing and feel like I can come across as very extroverted, but I am more times than not dealing with some sort of anxiety or feeling overstimulated. I overanalyze all of my conversations, thinking to myself, “I shouldn’t have said this” or “I should’ve said that.” However, I hate being alone, and I really come alive and feel my full self when I am with the people I don’t feel like I have to be “on” for.
