Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Priset Sandino.
Hi Janet, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been an ”artsy” person and ended up studying and creating art in college and graduate school. I have my B.A. in Fine Arts and my Masters in Art Education. When I moved to Scottsdale, I found my dream job, which was working at an art gallery who had pioneered an art leasing program. I stayed for 17 years and learned alot about dealing with artists, customer relations and developing outside business as well. Later I spent 5 years with ART-TALK newspaper where I ran the national advertising department; this experience put me in touch with all genres of artists across the country. My next position at Steinway pianos gave me the opportunity to create marketing ideas, private events, and fundraising activities – we even had a free “Summer Sizzling Series” which drew large crowds even in our hot summer months….then more time spent in another gallery where I made many more contacts in the art world and also hosted Friday night salons.
In addition to my love of art, my love of travel has coincided with this and brought me a myriad of visual pleasures and encounters with all sorts of artwork, architecture and artists!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have learned the art of perserverance, and patience. Followup is always important and meeting more than a client’s expectations. There has always been competition in the art world, among artists, galleries and art consultants -doing well sometimes creates problems with others but I learned to forge ahead. I was always the most successful consultant at both galleries where I worked and enjoyed very positive relationships with my clients….many of these I still work with!
I do love a good challenge from a client (to find something they saw years ago!) or who wants a very specific item, like a ‘steampunk’ sculpture or a graffitti type painting. In addition to those challenges, sometimes I need to place artwork in VERY long hallways, or a HUGE stairwell wall; this is a hurdle that I love to overcome and which also offers a great feeling of accomplishment.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Now that I’ve been working independently, I enjoy making my clients happy with the artwork that they envision, choose, or that I’ve presented to them…I love to think outside the box, and have been able to bring artists from overseas (e.g. Italy, Poland, Greece, France, England, China and Netherlands). Along with my clients input, doing site specific commissions (whether corporate or residential) is always a thrill – to see a piece of art come to fruition and then ‘bringing spaces to life with art’ (which later became my tag line) is a rewarding experience.
In addition to providing artwork and being a resource, I offer services like framing, installation, curation, re-sale, and general advisory
My skills led me to create a non- profit lobby gallery for a corporate client and even though it lasted only two years, we were able to showcase artists from ‘diverse’ backgrounds and minority groups.
I was also referred to be on the Scottsdale Public Art Advistory Council which is a 3 year term and I’m thoroughly enjoying this experience.
And lastly, I’ve been involved with Hospice of the Valley’s annual Art Auction which gives me the chance to bring in beautiful artworks from the artists, clients and galleries I know to help raise money for this worthy charity.
I’m also proud to have place six outdoor sculptures in the Ocotillo Community in Chandler which was part of their 1% for the arts program; also several major sculptural installations as in the large Mayo Clinic lobby fountain.
What matters most to you?
Satisfying my clients’ needs and desires and making their eyes light up when we install their artwork.
I have a good reputation and integrity and much of my work comes from referrals or designers that I know
