Daily Inspiration: Meet Erin Osborne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Osborne.

Hi Erin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
In the Spring of 2020, I got a voicemail stating school has been canceled for the rest of the year due to Covid-19. I was teaching Math 8 and Algebra 1 at Sinagua Middle School in Flagstaff, Arizona. In the Fall of 2020, we still were not allowed to report back to school. While teachers were doing the best they could, I knew children were starting to fall behind. Therefore, I decided to start tutoring, in person! I wanted to help as many kids as I could thrive in their new online learning environment, and provide that much-needed human connection they were missing.

Even though we eventually went back to in-person, I continued to pick up more and more students to tutor over the next two years. I was having fun and felt as if I was making a huge difference in many lives. So, at the end of the 2022 school year, I decided to take a leap of faith; take a pause on teaching in the classroom, and start my own tutoring business, Tandem Tutoring. I love working one on one with students because I can give them all my attention and individualized support, whether that is to challenge them more than they are getting in the classroom, to break the material down in a way that makes sense to them, or to help them find that confidence within themselves. Currently, I work online and in person with my clients so I can reach people all over the state/country, not just in my own city.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Taking the initial risk and stepping outside of my comfort zone! The unknown can be scary, but sometimes the grass really is greener on the other side!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional tutor that specializes in mathematics but has knowledge in multiple subject areas.

I am a certified math teacher with over seven years of experience, have ten-plus years of tutoring experience in individual and group settings, and have a Master of Science in Mathematics Education with Distinction. I believe that every child has the ability to do math at a high level. My goal is to help them believe that too. I want them to learn confidence through trial and error. After all, our brain grows the most when we make a mistake! I do everything in my power to explain mathematical concepts in a way that makes sense to them. We will work together as a team, have open and honest communication, and most importantly ask questions!

In addition to tutoring, I am a professional mountain bike racer and coach. I compete at the national and local levels and coach the Arizona Devo team. Devo is short for development; therefore, I work with junior and young adult athletes whose race age is between 15 and 22 years old.

What makes you happy?
Helping kids – whether that is in the classroom, on a bike, or in life! I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was young because I loved being there for my friends. I figured if I was a teacher, I could do the same thing but also help them love math as well! As I got older, I fell in love with mountain biking and found out coaching was also for me.

There is nothing better than to see the smile of a kid who finally gets it; gets how to solve that tricky math problem, gets how to ride that technical line they have been drooling over, gets how to handle hard life situations, or most importantly – gets how to be confident in themselves.
