Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Mosby .
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out working in the beauty industry at 18 years old. I was a freelance artist with the brand Philosophy, and would go to mostly Sephora, Ulta, and Nordstrom. I quickly learned about skincare and ingredients! This was a great way to get experience, especially being a part of the huge Trend Shows at Nordstrom and doing anywhere from 10-25 facials in a day for these events!
After meeting a ton of other freelancers and Account Executives in the field – I really was able to get my foot in the door and get a ton of needed experience. I then started freelancing for brands such as Buxom/Bare Minerals, Estée Lauder, and Anastasia Beverly Hills. Makeup was always my passion! Being able to color match and apply makeup on so many different types of skin textures, tones, etc, it really helped to diversify my experience and knowledge.
One of my friends from high school had reach out to me after seeing I would post pictures of makeup on myself and clients in store. She had asked if I did weddings or would do her makeup for hers. I was terrified – and hadn’t really thought about it before. I was intimidated and wasn’t sure if I was able to perform such a huge task for that big of a day! I finally responded and told her I would love to do it, although I had my hesitations. That wedding was what started it ALL. I quickly started posting all of the bridal party and the bride. The bride also posted about me and her experience and recommended me to everyone! After that – my business really started to take off. I then made it my full time job, and I haven’t looked back since – best decision ever!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think with every profession comes with some types of struggles! Looking back at some of my old work from years ago, I literally cringe. Practice, practice, practice!!!
Also – I think really understanding what your client wants is HUGE. I used to have my clients show me inspiration of what kind of look they wanted – and I would just copy the picture EXACTLY (same lip color, same eyeshadow colors, full coverage, etc). Now, if someone has a picture for inspo, I ask them what they love or don’t love about it, and really go over every aspect to make sure we are on the same page.
People are usually very particular about their makeup and how they want it, and that’s okay! I think that finding the right clients who personally like you, and your style is so important. I used to take every single person who inquired with me, regardless of what kind of look they wanted or details for the wedding day. Finding the RIGHT clients who adore you, your work, your style, and respect your pricing, is what will help your business for the long run.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Bridal makeup, but I will do makeup for all occasions! I love doing glam for boudoir, maternity, special occasions – any thing and every thing really!
I would say my style is definitely more “soft glam”. I love to enhance what is already there. Soft, natural, and elegant is what I strive for.
There are times I LOVE a nice smokey eye – but for the most part, I would say my style is very light and neutral.
I really love to take my time and be meticulous to get the perfect glowing look. I am a perfectionist and am super detail oriented. I want to make sure every single one of my clients leave feeling the most beautiful they have ever felt!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The beauty industry can be REALLY hard. It can be super cut throat and degrading.
Don’t look at others as competition- try to just focus on yourself and how you can better your own work and business.
This industry is all about connections, try not to burn any bridges. Always be the bigger person.
