Daily Inspiration: Meet Emily Joyce

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Joyce.

Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
When I was pregnant with my first, I retired from my job to be a stay-at-home mom and knew I was going to need a creative outlet to preserve some of my self/sanity after years of corporate life 😅 My grandmother had gifted me a lot of her old yarn and crochet hooks so I could make some blankets while I waited for my little one to arrive, as well as some old macrame magazines. Around the same time, my sister gifted me the first fiber art wall hanging I had ever seen, she made it special for my little’s room, and I immediately fell in love with the concept of fiber art. I began to wonder about all I could create using the yarn my grandmother gave me. Once I realized I could do something with this type of art, I opened Millie’s in honor of my grandmother, Billie, who had gifted me that yarn and magazines. She’s now 87, and my paid yarn cutter and organizer for all of my designs 🥰 Getting to share this experience of bringing personality and conversation into spaces with her has been exceptional ❤️

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Many things can seem outside our control, but we can pick our “hard” and “easy.” Being a stay-at-home mom and growing an art business is hard; balancing time spent with my child and on my creative ventures has been extremely difficult. The feeling of “Am I doing enough?” on both sides can be overwhelming. At the same time, I get to stay home with my baby, raise her and watch her grow, and she gets to witness her mama making a living doing what she loves. In a society where the traditional role of a woman has been pushed aside, I’m very proud to be the homemaker, the caretaker, and the creative.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a fiber artist specializing in custom wall hangings for all styles, spaces, and aesthetics. I’m most known for my interactive wall hangings, pieces of decor meant to be viewed and touched! My most popular design, the Modern Ombre, went viral on Tiktok with over 5 million views! I’m incredibly proud to be a small, woman-owned, and family-operated business – creating one-of-a-kind wall hangings alongside my grandmother and daughter, my two biggest inspirations.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
A person’s most valuable asset is their ability to believe in themselves. I’ve always been impulsive and prone to taking large leaps of faith, beginning with my dive into business ownership fresh out of high school. Absolutely anything is possible with a vision and a plan; with great risk comes great reward.
