Today we’d like to introduce you to Darin Senyk.
Hi Darin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got my musical start when I was super young, probably around six or seven. My dad, who is a blues musician, got me started with the guitar around then. I never took it seriously until I started listening to bands like Slipknot, All That Remains and Mastodon, to name a few. It was my discovery of metal that lead me to start thinking about starting a band. I met Kieran Lynch in grade school, and he shared the same excitement about metal and guitar as I did, so naturally when we found other friends to play music with, we started our first band called Hands of a Traitor around the time we were in highschool. It was easy back then, before we knew what it actually took to try and make a name for ourselves. After that band fizzled out, we decided to start a new project with more intention, got together with some other like-minded people and made The Ephemeral in 2016. The next year, I wanted to take an active part in the audio side of things and started studying audio engineering and working at a couple venues around the valley. Taking what I learned, I applied that to The Ephemeral’s music to help bring our musical ideas to life before taking everything to the studio. So far we’ve released two records, our second one getting some awesome recognition in the local metal scene. Right now we’re planning to hit the studio for our third release at the beginning of 2026.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road when you’re trying to do better than you did the day before. The hardest part about being a musician, at least for myself, is dealing with a lot of the self doubt that comes with dreaming. Navigating questions like “am I doing this the right way?” or “is anyone actually going to care about what we’re doing?” I’d say that a constant struggle for me is reminding myself that my personal enjoyment of music is what matters most, before anything else, and to find joy in the process of making music.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a musician and an audio engineer. I play guitar and sing in The Ephemeral, and I run sound at places like Rebel Lounge, Yucca Tap Room and Rhythm Room. I’m sure most folks in the scene know me either from my band or from meeting me at a show I’m mixing. I’m fortunate to have a life that gives so many opportunities to meet some truly awesome people, and I’m proud of the fact that most of them know me as a solid engineer and musician. I’m also proud of all the work my band mates and myself in The Ephemeral have already put in to this project. It’s been a wild ride so far that has granted the chance to tour, to make some killer music and to make lots of good friends.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was a weirdo. Most of my friends knew me as a hyperactive kid that was a little too stoked about metal. I might still be a weirdo, but some things never change.
