Daily Inspiration: Meet Courtney Redding

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Redding.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up watching my family own and run a landscape business most of my life, and I knew one day I would love to be apart of the industry. I love designing spaces but not very many people get to design an outdoor space. Arizona is a unique state for this industry because we can spend most of the year outdoors, so our spaces are much different than other states. As I grew older watching my parents design and bring outdoor spaces to life, I found myself wanting to learn more and dreamt of owning my own company one day where I would have the creative freedom to design outdoor spaces for families. My husband has been in the landscape and pool industry for 15 years. He started as a laborer and as he jumped companies he found himself being a project manager for a few big pool and landscape companies in the valley. He managed residential and commercial projects over the years and he began to share his love with me for the industry as well. He loved having the opportunity to build outdoor spaces for people to enjoy. We decided to open our own Pool company in the valley a couple years ago and we are now enjoying the excitement of building our brand up in the valley.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We honestly didnt know what to expect starting a company from essentially nothing, but for the most part we have been suprised with how fast we are growing. It definitely has had its struggles; the hardest part I think is building trust in this industry because unfortunately many people have had bad experiences with construction companies in general. You hear horror stories of construction companies starting a job than taking off with the clients’ money. With us being so new and trying to build a trusted brand, a lot of people are skeptical to have a newer company build their projects because they are afraid of being victims to the same situation. I think people feel more security with a big well-known builder in the area because they feel like they have more re course if something were to happen with their project. As we have completed projects and started building a portfolio and online presence it has started to become a little easier to obtain new clients/projects because we have great references and referrals.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would say that we specialize in bringing modern/luxury designs to our clients that are affordable. It doesn’t take much to make a space look high end with simple inexpensive touches such as materials and using straight lines and shapes. I am most proud of the designs we create for our clients because we strive to make each project unique to every client, we are honored to build a project for, we try not to repeat designs. What sets us apart from other companies is we give our clients a very personal experience from the design phase all the way through construction. Since we are small, we are able to work intimately with our clients, so they don’t feel like just a number with the 100’s of jobs some of these companies are completing. Even as we grow, we strive to make sure every client feels like they are a priority and they are the only client we are building for. We take those experiences seriously and want to build that name for ourselves as we move forward.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’d say anyone who starts their own business from scratch is a risk taker in some way. For us we started building this company slowly knowing this is the direction we wanted to go, but my husband and I both still had full time jobs. Our plan was to get our business started then when it was starting to pick up, we would quit our full-time jobs. Unfortunately, things don’t always work out that way and my husband was let go from his job before we were ready due to layoffs. He had worked for the company for six years, so this was very unexpected. We decided in that moment, instead of him finding another full-time job we were going to take the risk and put everything we had towards our business in hopes it would take off fast enough so he would never have to go back to working for another company. I’m a firm believer in everything happens for a reason and I think we needed that push in order to jump in fully.
