Daily Inspiration: Meet Cara & James Kerouac

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cara & James Kerouac

Hi Cara & James, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our story begins with a shared dream of freedom, exploration, and a deeper connection to the natural world. We’re Cara and James, the voices behind Kerouac’s Cruising, a podcast and lifestyle dedicated to traveling the country with our dogs, finding remote places to roam, and sharing the lessons we’ve learned along the way.

Years ago, we found ourselves caught up in the grind of conventional living—long hours, unhealthy habits, and a feeling that life was passing us by—an innate knowing that life was made for more called us to change everything. We pushed to reassess our priorities, simplify our lives, and take the leap toward a lifestyle aligned with our values.

Trading stability for spontaneity, we downsized to live off-grid in a tiny home near the Grand Canyon. That time in the wilderness taught us to appreciate life’s simple joys—watching the sunrise, learning new skills, and connecting with each other and the land. Eventually, the pull of adventure grew too strong to resist, and we decided to take our love for exploration on the road.

With our three dogs by our side, Kerouac’s Cruising was born as a way to share our journey with others—stories of camping, adventure, and finding beauty in the unexpected. Our mission is to inspire people to break free from the traditional mold, embrace the wild unknown, and cultivate deeper connections with themselves, their loved ones, and the world around them.

We’ve faced our share of challenges, from battling limiting beliefs to overcoming the inner doubts that can creep in when forging an unconventional path. Each obstacle has only strengthened our commitment to this journey and our desire to inspire others to embrace their own unique adventures. Through our podcast, blog, and book projects, we aim to empower others to live intentionally, appreciate nature, and chase their own unique version of freedom.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
1. Balancing Freedom and Stability
Living a life on the road has been our dream, but it also comes with challenges—especially balancing the freedom we crave with the need for stability. There’s financial uncertainty and the constant need to adapt to new circumstances, which can feel overwhelming at times. However, we’ve learned to lean into creativity and resourcefulness. By focusing on what truly matters to us—our connection with nature, each other, and our community—we’ve found ways to make this lifestyle work. Affiliate partnerships, engaging content creation, and a commitment to simple living have become the cornerstones of our journey.

2. Overcoming Limiting Beliefs
We didn’t just wake up one day and know this was possible. Transitioning from a conventional life to one of adventure required us to confront some serious limiting beliefs. Questions like, “Is this realistic?” or fears of judgment from others crept in more often than we’d like to admit. But ultimately, our love for travel, storytelling, and the unique lifestyle we envisioned helped us move past those doubts. Every challenge along the way has reminded us that the life we’ve created is worth the effort—and sharing our story helps others realize they can break free from their own limitations too.

3. Adapting to the Unknown
Let’s be real—life on the road is unpredictable. From unexpected mechanical breakdowns to dealing with extreme weather and finding safe spots to camp with our dogs, the unknown is just part of the adventure. We’ve had to learn to pivot quickly, stay flexible, and trust our instincts. With careful planning, a good dose of humor, and leaning on the lessons we’ve learned, we’ve been able to turn these challenges into stories worth telling.

4. Managing the Digital Hustle
Building a podcast and online presence while traveling adds another layer of complexity to our lives. Staying connected in remote areas, managing content creation, and consistently sharing value with our audience—all while living our adventures—can sometimes feel like a juggling act. But through trial and error, we’ve found systems that work for us. By staying true to our passion for storytelling and focusing on authenticity, we’ve built a platform that connects with people on a deeper level.

5. Staying Healthy and Grounded
One of the less glamorous aspects of full-time travel is figuring out how to stay healthy and balanced. From finding nourishing food in remote areas to keeping up with physical activity and managing stress, it’s an ongoing effort. We’ve embraced a flexible, paleo/keto-inspired way of eating, stayed active through hiking and exploring, and leaned into mindfulness practices and nature’s restorative power to keep ourselves grounded.

6. Finding Our Audience
Let’s face it—carving out a space in the crowded world of content creation and podcasting isn’t easy. We’ve had moments of wondering if our message was resonating with anyone. But we’ve learned to trust the process, focus on authenticity, and create content that reflects who we truly are. Sharing our personal experiences, struggles, and joys has helped us connect with an amazing community of like-minded adventurers, and we’re so grateful for the support we’ve found along the way.

Behind the Mic and Lens

Our work also involves creating resources for fellow adventurers. Whether it’s tips for dispersed camping, off-grid living, or curated stories about hidden gems, we focus on making exploration accessible and enriching. Collaborating with brands that align with our values allows us to connect our audience with tools and resources that enhance their adventures.

At the heart of everything we create is a simple goal: to inspire curiosity, foster connection, and remind people that the world is filled with beauty, just waiting to be discovered.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID-19 pandemic was a turning point for us, much like it was for many others. It brought both challenges and opportunities for growth. On a personal level, it underscored the fragility of life and deepened our appreciation for the freedoms we often take for granted.

Living off-grid provided a unique perspective during the pandemic. While much of the world was confined, we found solace in nature and simplicity. The isolation many feared became our strength, allowing us to focus on what truly mattered—our connection to one another, our health, and the joy of small, meaningful moments.

The pandemic also became a catalyst for change. It solidified our commitment to living authentically and embracing a lifestyle that prioritizes experience over material gain. We realized how important it is to inspire others to step outside their comfort zones, especially when the world feels uncertain.
