Hi Calvin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Calvin Maryland, and I have been practicing the art of tattooing since 2009. Initially, I began in the comfort of my mother’s home, utilizing a tattoo machine purchased from eBay. During this period, I would invite friends to serve as practice subjects, with the primary objective of refining my skills. However, at the time, I did not consider tattooing a feasible career option to provide a sustainable livelihood. As a result, I took a break from tattooing and ventured into different professions, which proved to be short-lived. Only after my daughter’s birth did I consciously decide to dedicate myself entirely to the art of tattooing.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Embarking on pursuing my passion has been a challenging experience, fraught with setbacks and disappointments. The road to success has been far from easy, and I have learned that setbacks are an inherent aspect of pursuing one’s passion. Despite the difficulties, I have persevered and have been fortunate to enjoy several positive moments that have far outweighed the negative experiences. Over time, I have worked at two different tattoo shops before opening my own business. These experiences taught me valuable lessons about the industry, especially what not to do as a tattoo artist. My time in these shops has given me the necessary insight to navigate the industry’s nuances effectively. As such, my experiences have prepared me to succeed as a professional tattoo artist.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional tattoo artist based in Sierra Vista, Arizona. I have honed my craft for several years, specializing in realism tattoos. From black and grey to color, I am passionate about creating pieces that capture the essence of their subject matter. One thing that sets me apart as an artist is my ability to adapt to any client’s requests. Every tattoo should be a collaborative effort between the artist and the client. As such, I prioritize listening to my client’s ideas and visions and working with them to bring their ideas to life. Throughout my career, I have been committed to providing clients with the highest level of service possible. I work meticulously to ensure that every tattoo I create meets or exceeds my client’s expectations. This level of dedication has earned me a reputation as a skilled and reliable artist within the Sierra Vista community.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Maintaining a strong sense of identity is essential to building a successful career in the tattoo industry. Quality and characteristics are of utmost importance to attract the right clientele; staying true to oneself and maintaining a clear understanding of one’s identity is essential. As such, I make it a point to be transparent about who I am, wearing my heart on my sleeve and maintaining a genuine, authentic approach in all interactions. By staying true to myself and being transparent, I am better equipped to attract clients who share similar values and appreciate the quality of work that I offer. Ultimately, I aim to create an environment where my clients feel comfortable and confident in my abilities, allowing us to collaborate on meaningful, high-quality tattoos.
