Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Gottshall.
Hi Brian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old and obsessed over learning my favorite punk and metal songs and then got into more folkish music around the end of high school. I started experimenting with singing around this time and that is what propelled me to songwriting.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely been a bumpy ride, to say the least. I think when I first started writing songs, I didn’t know what “sound” I was going for and I really couldn’t tell if a song was good or not.
One thing I learned along the way was to let songs sit for a while and then when I come back to them, if there’s that same adrenaline spark that I got when I wrote it, I usually know it’s a keeper, or if it’s stuck in my head all the time. All that to say, It was and is still a journey of learning to trust songs and understand what makes them special to me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I write and record Folk music under the moniker “Dos Argentés.” I’ve been doing this in varying capacities for about 7 years now, and this past October I released my debut EP entitled “Canary Days.” I’m immensely proud of the songs on it and am currently in the studio working on the songs for my first full-length record.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have a lyric that I wrote a little while back that has been speaking to me about this very topic. “If you have to dream to fail, don’t fail to dream, if it exceeds your grasp it’s probably worth the scheme”. I think most creatives would love for their passion to be their main source of income, but with that comes huge risks.
That is certainly my goal and this year in particular I’ve felt very pushed to pursue music in way more of a capacity than I ever have. I work as a full-time carpenter just to pay the bills and to pay for music-related things such as studio time and marketing. If I could ever make a living doing anything music related, that is an absolute success in my book.
