Today we’d like to introduce you to Baylee Reed.
Hi Baylee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I picked up a camera for the first time back in April 2020 for a TikTok challenge that my little sister made me do! That TikTok ended up going viral and we hit one million views within 12 hours, now it’s at 3.7 million, which is crazy, so I kind of got a kickstart on the app and made me realize that maybe I was good at taking photos. I spent the whole summer of 2020 doing TikTok photography challenges for fun and ended up getting inquiries for paid shoots from clients and I started taking clients in August of 2020. It’s been crazy busy and I get a lot of seniors that found me through social media or my sister’s social media and started booking seniors for grad photos and now averaging around 6-8 senior shoots a week.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been smooth as far as growing my business and getting new clients but the behind the scenes work has been crazy. I was in my last semester of university classes when I started so I was trying to juggle class and editing/sending off galleries in a timely manner and I would usually push my schoolwork off to the side and stay up super late editing. It was a lot of work that people don’t get to see, like building my feel and brand, hours of editing and sending galleries, making sure I’m marketing on socials, all while making sure I make the grades to graduate in December. Fall 2020 semester was a blur but I loved every second.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in portrait photography and have lots of senior photo sessions. I always try to keep my photos showing movement or just candid instead of posed and the traditional senior photo look. I like the art behind it and the creativity. I would say it’s kind of a mix between a dreamy and edgy feel, and I try to edit in a way that brings some moody feels in there as well. I think that’s what sets me apart from other photographers, I am not afraid to be different and put my clients in some weird poses or movements to get the shot. I do it because they trust it will turn out cool and they came to me for that kind of photo. I’m most proud of sticking to keeping my shoots more on the creative side!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I had never tried photography until April 2020, which is crazy to think about. I had no idea what I wanted to do for a career until quarantine started and I tried it as a hobby for fun. It’s really weird to think about how everything just lined up to show me what my passion was in life. I used to stress about what I wanted to do and knew I had too much drive for travel and creativity to sit at a desk job, so I found my passion and ran with it and put my all into it.
