Today we’d like to introduce you to Bailey Cornwell.
Hi Bailey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Before tattooing and becoming an Esthetician I wore many hats for many companies. I worked in HOA, Collections, and the Mortgage Industry all things that are financially fulfilling but not fulfilling in the ways you need a career to be.
I started working in the industry at the beginning of this year and ever since then, I have built a clientele, grown my social media, opened up my own studio to tattoo out of with a friend, and have been working like crazy to build a successful brand and business. Very tiring but very rewarding work.
I have always preached to people to try as many things as they can because they may not know what you are good at or what they will fall in love with and I am a testament to that statement. I have had mini businesses, created shit, worked behind a desk, failed at lots of things, and succeeded at others. I always knew that my life was worth more than sitting behind a desk and working a 9-5. I now have the pleasure of meeting people from all over the valley, learning their stories, and either giving them some cool art or allowing them to have an hour of relaxation when they step into the studio.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business or working in an industry where you have to build a clientele is never a smooth road. It’s bumpy but it’s fun as hell.
I left a job making over 100k a year to work as an Esthetician and tattoo artist and start from scratch. To say I was humbled and scared is an understatement. It was a huge leap of faith and investment that I made in myself and the future. I think every day that you own a business is a scary day because each day is so different you never know what to expect but that is where the fun comes in. You learn to adapt to many situations and it only makes you better at what you do.
I have learned so much about myself through the process of starting my business and having a clientele. You really start to know your worth and you learn what you are capable of which in my case was a lot more than what I ever thought. The younger me would be proud of what we are building.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist, an esthetician, and an unlicensed therapist as I would like to call it.
In these roles, I also wear many hats. I specialize in skin care, fine lines/tiny tats, and education.
In my day-to-day of tattooing or giving facials, I have the ability to really leave a mark on people, literally and figuratively.
In my role as an esthetician, I get to spend an hour with someone where they can just have a moment out of their busy lives to just relax and take a deep breath. I also get to work with clients who have struggled with their skin and trust me to help improve it for them. There is no better feeling in the world than to see someone leave with a huge smile on their face and glowing skin. It is a confidence booster for them as a client and me as their esthetician.
In my role as a tattoo artist, I have had the honor of giving people the gift of art. I have been able to give people their first tattoo (which to me will always be a special feeling), I have created art for people mourning the loss of a loved one & I have been able to tattoo designs I have created myself. It feeds the hunger of my creative side and to those who have allowed me and will allow me to tattoo them. THANK YOU.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think knowledge is power and I think as a creator or business owner it’s important to keep learning in any way you can. My number one tip would be to not be afraid to reach out to people in the industry and ask questions.
Everyone’s experience is so different and unique that you can learn so much from those in and out of your circle and you may also be able to teach them something as well which is beautiful. Being open to information and ideas is a powerful tool to be successful.
I think overall be who you are and don’t stray from that. Be open, work hard, and don’t be afraid to fail.
