Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevon Powell .
Hi Trevon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I began sewing in 2016. Initially just designing creations for myself. That ultimately led to me creating for the general public. My main demographic was sewing for people who attended church. And I did that for about four years straight. I’ve had the pleasure of creating for multiple people nationwide. However, the demand for orders I was receiving became overwhelming and strenuous. I began to lose my passion for sewing because I wasn’t allowed to be creative due to the high demand for production that was going out weekly. In 2021 I decided to stop sewing for the public. I didn’t want to start hating the passion I felt for sewing. So I took a year off and re-evaluated where I wanted to take this sewing journey. And in that solitude, I realized where my truest love lies, which was in theatrical/historical sewing. The theater was my first love. And I wanted to merge that love for sewing and theater. So I went back to the theater, started costuming for different shows around the valley, and dabbled my hand into the historical garment industry. And now, I have been fortunate enough to make historical and theatrical costuming my livelihood. And it has been going strong for now over a year.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a challenging ride. I believe anytime you are chasing your dreams; you will be faced with the reality of whether or not you’re headed down the right path. Or if the journey you’re taking is worth it. There have been countless times I have had to step back and re-evaluate if this is something I truly desire for myself. But ultimately, if you have the tenacity and determination to achieve it, you will succeed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
- I specialize in theatrical and historical costuming.
- Theatrical- Ranging from any genre.
- Historical – Ranging from the Victorian/Edwardian period.
Any big plans?
I plan to start an online store where theaters and the general public can rent or purchase my garments. I’m partnered with the Tempe History Museum and Arkansas Historical Park Museum to provide quality historical costumes for interpretation work.
