Conversations with TASTYT

Today we’d like to introduce you to TASTYT.

Hi TASTYT, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My story with EDM music began by attending music festivals in 2015. A couple of years later, I discovered house and techno music at Nocturnal Wonderland; a music festival in Southern California . Throughout the years of attending festivals and getting down on the dance floor at various clubs, I became inspired to bring the vision of being a DJ to life. This brought me to what I needed to have in order to make it happen and once I obtained the equipment to begin to learn the craft of DJing I started downloading my favorite tracks.

Once I had a decent amount of tracks in my library I spent a lot of time setting cue points to then experiment and teach myself how to mix. I started creating mixes I envisioned myself and others vibing to on the dance floor. From there I recorded and released my first mix on Soundcloud. Then everything began to build, even my vision. I performed my first gig in the desert and did live streams during the pandemic, which was super exciting! This time period definitely allowed me more time to focus on my brand.

I started exploring other forms of art, began creating graphics to use for covers, and worked with different photographers to build content for social media whether it was a photoshoot or a performance. Working with photographers/videographers has helped tremendously with my platform and growth with other artists. My first club show was Interconnection on May 12th of 2021 at the Monarch Theatre which is one I will definitely never forget! As time went on I have had the opportunity to play at venues including Cobra Arcade Bar, Club Endgame, Bar Smith, Hi-Score Club, and C.A.S.A. Tempe.

I also made my first line of bucket hat merch in 2021 which contributed to my taste in colorfulness on the fashion side of things. I would not be where I am now without the support of others as well as the amazing opportunities I have had along the way. As time has passed, I have discovered myself more as an artist and continue to find what I want to include in my project. I am now incorporating shuffling since dancing is where it all started for me!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. I don’t think anything that you are called to do in life is meant to go smoothly otherwise we would not grow or learn from our experiences. Some of the struggles I have encountered along the way have been social anxiety, resistance to change when it comes to inconsistency, and battling a mindset of needing to take the time to heal my inner wounds while desiring to push myself to move forward quicker on my path.

When I began this project I was also entering the beginning of a transformation into a new me and needed to let go of a past version of myself to truly step into my purpose. I told myself it was time to quit only thinking about what I wanted to do and actually bring action to it. Being new to the music industry was very exhilarating, however, I did not know how everything worked from a business standpoint nor did I know who to trust. I shifted my focus on what I felt I could do on my own to market and put myself out there as an artist.

Sometimes I would have thoughts about being worried about what others would think and/or self doubt especially when it came to inconsistency. I had to remind myself that each of our paths are unique and others do not see the battles being faced behind closed doors. Being an artist consists of a lot of energy being put into your craft, and so does self healing because you have to do the inner work. A couple of things I have kept in mind is to believe in yourself even if others do not because who will if you don’t and what you put in is what you are going to get out. It’s hard work to make your dreams come true, but it’s even more important to not lose yourself in the process. If taking time to take care of you is necessary then do it! Trusting the process even though you don’t fully understand it is crucial.

Throughout each creation, experience, and opportunity, I have gained more confidence in myself and my project. I am very thankful for those who have continued to believe in me and I cannot wait to see where this next chapter is headed!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Tech/Bass House DJ and shuffle dancer based out of Tempe, AZ. I consider myself to be a self-taught flow artist, and I aspire to inspire others to break out of their limitations. From the beginning, a lot of my time was spent digging for new tracks on Soundcloud. Using a certain selection of tracks I then put together a mix to upload and/or perform in front of others. I still spend time on the search for the freshest tracks, but I have also shifted my focus more towards music production.

I specialize in individuality, being original, and doing things outside the norm. I feel that marketing and organization come naturally to me. I also tend to pay very close attention to detail. I am known for a quicker-paced mixing style, my taste in track selection, and being organized/structured. My brand is very bright, colorful and consists of tie-dye as well as a checkered aesthetic.

What sets me apart from others is the fact I am incorporating other forms of art such as shuffling into my brand as a musician because to me they go hand in hand with one another. I am most proud of everything I have accomplished and my resiliency. Seeing the growth over the past couple of years both professionally and as an individual brings me a lot of happiness. This year is going to be about breaking out of my comfort zone and staying self-disciplined to have more consistency and success.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can potentially work or collaborate with me by reaching out to get to know one another and discuss the collaboration. I have love for everyone, and I am very protective over my energy as well as my work so I will be particular with whom I am going to collaborate with.

Others can support me by following, liking, commenting, and/or sharing on social media. Listening and/or reposting music on streaming platforms is also very helpful. Alternative ways to support would be attending shows and/or purchasing merchandise. Any support is greatly appreciated!
