Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Asmussen.
Hi Steve, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I love animals and photography, but when I started shooting pet photos, there weren’t many other photographers doing what I thought was a good job. They would set up ugly backdrops and use fake flowers for props. The lighting could have been better, but it’s just not an overall good representation of the pets. I took my knowledge from years of studio photography and combined it with knowledge from the few folks who represented what I knew pet photography could be.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are many challenges to pet photography. Namely, the pets! For every great shot I get, dozens are blurry because the pet moves at the last second or they are intimidated by the camera gear and a new face. I give the animals time to warm up to me and my equipment. Treats are usually helpful!
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love helping families capture the essence of their pets. Smartphones are nearly ubiquitous, but not everyone can get a decent picture of their pet. Black dogs and cats are tough. That’s where I come in! I enjoy creating memories that pet families can cherish for a lifetime.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
While I have done studio work in the past, I prefer to work with the animals in an environment where they are most comfortable. For some, that’s in a home. Others may have a favorite park or trail. Pet owners need to know their animals and understand some may have a fear of strangers or new experiences. Because of this, photo sessions can sometimes run long, and in the end, the outcome may still be different from what the owners had in mind. My top priority is the safety and comfort of the animals. If a dog is stressed, it will show in the photo. Nobody wants that.
