Conversations with Simone Holmes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Simone Holmes.

Hi simone, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been an athlete all my life. Basketball was my first love. So once that was truly over, I became a regular civilian. Working regular jobs. Content. Stagnant. I was a loan processor for JP Morgan Chase for 3 years and ended up resigning because I was tired of the mental stress. I had always been into locs.I was doing them on the side while working for Chase. I had them myself for about 8 years. The last 4 years of that journey, I did them myself.

Once I resigned from that job, I went full time with locs and it just took off from there.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth is funny lol. It has not been a smooth road but it’s getting smoother. Going from employee to entrepreneur seems simple but you’re literally in control of EVERYTHING. You can’t go to your boss and ask for help. You are the boss. I’ve not been the most social person growing up but being in a field where I am a servicer, I was forced to interact. I was forced to speak, respond, suggest, etc, Covid was a huge struggle, having 3 kids in 5 years was a struggle. Not having everything set up the way I wanted it to be, was a struggle. Sticking with my decision to choose entrepreneurship was and still is a struggle.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Loctitian. I specialize in locs. Most people know them as “dreadlocks” but we don’t affiliate ourselves with that term. I’m known for crispy clean parts & neat styles. Everyone new who sits in my chair raves about my parts. One thing that sets me apart from the others is that I take my time. I’m never in a rush. Even if I’m behind schedule, I make sure the person in my chair doesn’t feel like I’m behind even though I feel like I’m malfunctioning on the inside lol. Another thing I feel that sets me apart is that I’m steady learning. I still watch videos, tutorials and read about locs. I don’t ever feel like I’m too good to stop learning. When you feel like that, the integrity of the work declines.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was suuuuuper shy. I was a crybaby, Very quiet. Very curious, Very observant. Very smart. I was into basketball , video games, music, puzzles, drawing , reading/writing, word games and newspaper comics. My dad would always leave that section of the newspaper for me in the bathroom. I would do the crypto quotes, crosswords and stuff on there. I was kind of a nerd. Still am.
