Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Savat.
Hi Sam, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Thailand and moved to the U.S. when I was 15. After high school, I joined the Army and served as a combat medic. In 2019, I lost one of my closest friends from the military. We had shared so many memories, but barely any photos. That hit me hard—and made me realize how important it is to document the moments we care about before they’re gone.
That was the turning point. I started picking up my camera more intentionally, photographing couples, and over time it snowballed into a business. What started as curiosity turned into something I can’t imagine living without. I now run Sam Savat Photography, a destination wedding brand rooted in honest storytelling. I photograph weddings around the world for couples who value being present and want photos that actually feel like them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth ride—but I don’t think it’s supposed to be. Building a business while figuring out who you are at the same time is chaotic in the best way. I’ve moved across the country multiple times, lived out of a van, rebranded, made mistakes, and learned everything the hard way.
The hardest part has been staying true to myself while growing. It’s easy to get caught up trying to be what you think clients want or comparing yourself to other photographers. But I’ve found the more I lean into what actually feels real and honest to me, the more aligned everything becomes—from the clients I attract to the way I shoo
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a destination wedding photographer based in Arizona, but I shoot all over the world—from vineyards in Italy to beaches in Thailand. I specialize in capturing luxury weddings in a way that feels intentional, emotional, and true to the couple. My work is known for blending raw, candid moments with bold, artistic storytelling. It’s not just about pretty photos—it’s about making art from real human connection.
What I’m most proud of is how deeply I connect with my couples. I don’t just show up with a camera; I become part of the day. That energy—of trust, fun, and real emotion—is what makes the images feel so alive. A lot of couples have told me that they forgot I was even taking photos because they felt so comfortable being themselves.
What sets me apart is my perspective. I grew up in Thailand, served as a medic in the U.S. Army, and lived in a van traveling the country. That life experience taught me how to adapt, how to see beauty in unexpected places, and how to be fully present. I bring that same presence and depth into every wedding I shoot.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
For a while, I thought I had to shoot a certain way or present myself like other photographers to be taken seriously. But the more I leaned into what felt natural to me—how I see people, how I shoot, how I connect—the better everything got. The photos, the experience, the kind of clients I attract.
People don’t hire me just for pretty pictures. They hire me because they feel seen, understood, and taken care of. And that only happens when you stop trying to be like everyone else and start trusting your own voice.
