Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Goldman.
Hi Robert, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My interest in art began around age eight with encouragement from my parents and siblings. My mother who was an artist was my first inspiration along with my older brother Dana and my sister Shila who was always supportive, and of course I have shared many art experiences with my younger brother Ken.
Ken and I later worked together painting murals in San Diego. Ken and I continue to critique each other’s art which is very helpful since we have absolute trust in each other’s judgement.
My training included the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA along with workshops from many artists such as Matt Smith, Ray Vinella, Phil Starke, Wayne Thiebaud, Wolf Kahn, and especially Ray Roberts.
I started showing my work in San Diego in the early 70’s, where I had yearly solo shows at various galleries.
My wife and I moved from San Diego to Tucson AZ in 1994 where I began my interest in the high desert landscape of the Southwest. We now reside in Prescott AZ from where I travel all over Northern Arizona and Utah exploring the vast landscape for painting possibilities.
My career took off after my participation in the annual Maynard Dixon Country shows at the Thunderbird Foundation in Mt Carmel UT. where I had four consecutive solo shows.
I participate in annual shows with the Phippen Museum and continue to search for inspiration from the Southwestern landscape.
In addition to being represented by the Thunderbird Foundation / Maynard Dixon Legacy Museum, I am also represented by the Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale AZ, and the Shaun Horne Gallery in Crested Butte CO.
Over the years I have taught workshops, and currently have an online mentorship program with Mastrius.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d say most of it has been a struggle which I have been willing to face because it is what I love to do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an artist, I find beauty and meaning in so much that surrounds us in the world. Over the years I have worked in many different mediums and subject matter, but eventually I found landscape painting to be the subject that I wanted to pursue.
I am especially drawn to the dramatic and monumental aspects of the high desert canyon country. On one hand I frequently paint popular areas such as the Grand Canyon, but I especially favor less visited areas such as Coalmine Canyon or areas around the Grand Staircase and Glen Canyon.
The most common response I get from collectors and fellow artists is that my work is instantly recognizable because of my use of color in addition to subject matter.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
It is very rare, but sometimes circumstances have worked in my favor.
Some examples:
Back in 1974 I had a large 8′ x 8′ abstract painting accepted into the California/Hawaii Regional Competition which was exhibited at the San Diego Museum of Fine Art.
I had applied to the Art Center College of Design which was then in Los Angeles, and was accepted with advanced standing into the 6th semester.
I had the opportunity to spend two weeks painting with the painter Wayne Thiebaud in Santa Fe NM. We also played tennis together and had a friendship which lasted many years. A few years later he awarded me the 2000$ prize at the Lana International Water media Competition.
I had always admired the Maynard Dixon Country Show which was held each August in Mt Carmel, UT, and was so surprised to have the owner Paul Bingham call and ask me to be the guest artist. Him and his wife Susan later gave me four solo shows there at their gallery.
