Conversations with Patrick Greenwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Greenwood

Hi Patrick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After military service, I embarked on a 25-year career in the information technology field, working in various roles in sales, engineering, support, and design. My inspiration for writing came from his business travels to places like Vietnam, China, Japan, Taiwan, and Portugal. A true believer in listening to one’s passion, I began writing in early 2020 based on several trips I made while cycling in various countries. In my debut award-winning novel, “Forever our Sunrise in Saigon,” I drew upon several non-fictional events in Vietnam, including the war with the US, the last days of Saigon falling, and the chaos at the US embassy.

My second fictional novel, “Shores of Okinawa” was based on several events that occurred during my 28 years in cybersecurity. Many of the plots within the second book have become real.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest, I wasn’t naturally suited to be a writer. I have dealt with dyslexia for most of my life, and becoming a writer has remained a lifelong dream. For most of my professional career in the cybersecurity and information technology field, I have always found a way to work through every challenge in my writing.

When I released “Forever our Sunrise in Saigon,” this became a lifelong achievement, which was topped by the release of “Shores of Okinawa.”

Today, I continue to write cybersecurity blogs for technology companies and am working on my third novel, “Scent of the Lotus,” which is due out in July 2025!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Prior to writing professionally, I served in the military and the cybersecurity field. For 28 years, I watched the Internet change from being an research network to a global communications platform filled with movies, shopping, and hackers. One of the most exciting moments in stopping a global hacker group funded by a nations-state. That happened more than once in my professional life.

Those events fueled the creativity behind my second novel, “Shores of Okinawa.” In this book, Jack Kendall, the main character from “Forever our Sunrise in Saigon” and his mentor Forest Adams mobilize a team of global hackers to try block China from hacking Taiwan’s vital military, healthcare, and financial networks.

Many parts of my second novel were based on actual events. It is up to the reader figure out which ones 🙂

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am a huge fan of Danielle Steel. She influenced me greatly and provided a foundation for writing romantic stories. Her novel, “Message from Nam,” gave me great inspiration to write “Forever our Sunrise in Saigon.”

I also a huge fan of a Tom Clancy. His novel, “The Hunt for Red October” and “Threat Vector” played an important in my role giving my the inspiration to write techno thrillers.

Ultimately, my writing foundation was also influenced by Ernest Hemingway. I always imagined myself writing at the table in a harbor in Portugal or a teahouse in Saigon just like him. In reality, I did both!
